شکریہ لذّتِ محبت کا
کون جیتا بغیر سوز و گداز

عشق کی راہ کے نشیب و فراز

راز ہے میری آرزو مندی
اور تیری نگاہ پردۂ راز

He died very young, of complications due to heavy drinking. I recall only one misra that someone had composed as his obituary … apne kiye pe maut pashemaaN hai aajkal. This has sufi-romance ambiguities in the finest traditions of classical urdu poetry. Both the beloved and god are addressed. It is a Ghair mudarraf (without a radeef) Ghazal with the same qaafiya – aaz – as Ghalib’s maiN huN apni shikast ki aavaaz and is linked to Ghalib naqsh-e qadam.

The poet/lover/mystic’s heart beat wildly (because of the intensity of love) and this caused his soul to wake up (to the reality of true love). He heard/recognized the beloved’s (god’s) voice/words.

The pleasure of love is in suffering pain and sorrow. Thus, thanks to the pleasure of love that I am able to live – because who can live without sorrow and pain.

The ups and downs of the pathway of love could not be handled/traveled along using the light of wisdom (something else was required – passion).

It is a great mystery that the poet/lover desires the beloved so intensely. Her (indifferent, non-chalant) glance keeps a veil over this secret. Both the lover and the beloved keep this a secret … the lover, because he does not want to malign her name and the beloved because it is her nature/style … a poetic convention.

Awareness/knowledge (of the material world) always leaves the poet/lover thirsty (dry/bitter throat), but because of the pleasure of “vajd”/trance/ecstacy/passion of love he is no longer thirsty. May the pleasure of forgetting oneself (losing ego, getting union with the beloved) live forever.
