یاد آ گیا ۔ خُمار بارہ بنکوی
مجھ کو شِکست دل کا مزا یاد آ گیا
تم کیوں اُداس ہو گئے کیا یاد آ گیا
کہنے کو زندگی تھی بہت مختصر مگر
کچھ یوں بسر ہوئی کہ خدا یاد آ گیا
واعظ سلام لے کہ چلا مے کدے کو میں
فردوس گُم شدہ کا پتہ یاد آ گیا
برسے بغیر ہی جو گھٹا گِھر کے کھُل گئی
اک بے وفا کا عہد وفا یاد آ گیا
مانگیں گے اب دعا کہ اُسے بھول جائیں ہم
لیکن جو وہ بوقت دعا یاد آ گیا
حیرت ہے تم کو دیکھ کے مسجد میں اے خمارؔ
کیا بات ہو گئی جو خدا یاد آ گیا
याद आ गया – ख़ुमार बाराबंकवी
मुझ को शिकस्त-ए-दिल का मज़ा याद आ गया
तुम क्यूँ उदास हो गए क्या याद आ गया
कहने को ज़िंदगी थी बहुत मुख़्तसर मगर
कुछ यूँ बसर हुई कि ख़ुदा याद आ गया
वाएज़ सलाम ले के चला मय-कदे को मैं
फ़िरदौस-ए-गुमशुदा का पता याद आ गया
बरसे बग़ैर ही जो घटा घिर के खुल गई
एक बेवफ़ा का अहद-ए-वफ़ा याद आ गया
माँगेंगे अब दुआ के उसे भूल जाएँ हम
लेकिन जो वो ब-वक़्त-ए-दुआ याद आ गया
हैरत है तुम को देख के मस्जिद में ऐ ख़ुमार
क्या बात हो गई जो ख़ुदा याद आ गया

mujh ko shikast1-e-dil ka maza yaad aa gaya
tum kyuN udaas ho gaye kya yaad aa gaya1.defeat, breaking
The poet/lover is despondent because he remembers the ‘pleasure’ of the pain of his broken heart. But he is surprised that she also looks sad. Why? Is that because she also remembers the same incident or because she is thinking of the ‘other’ and missing him.
kahne ko zindagi thi bahut muKhtasar1 magar
kuchh yuN basar2 hui ke Khuda yaad aa gaya1.brief 2.spend
‘Khuda yaad aa gaya’ is an expression that implies that things got so difficult that there was no other help – only god could help, hence he is remembered. Thus, even though life was short, it was spent such that all the poet/lover could do was remember god. Implied also is a subtle blame … god gave him these difficulties.
vaa’ez1 salaam2 le ke chala maikade3 ko maiN
firdaus4-e gum-shuda5 ka pata6 yaad aa gaya1.preacher 2.greetings/farewell 3.tavern 4.heaven 5.lost, forgotten 6.address, whereabouts
O preacher accept my farewell that I am leaving for the tavern. I just remembered the whereabouts of that long lost heaven.

Dark clouds are an anticipation of rain and joy/celebration. In the poetic tradition it is also followed by wine drinking. But this time the sky of overcast with dark clouds promising rain and then it cleared up – just like the promises made and broken by the beloved.

The poet/lover wants to pray and in his prayers ask that he be able to forget her … but what is he going to do if he remembers her just as he begins his prayer … he will forget all prayer be lost in thoughts of her.

kya baat ho gaii jo Khuda yaad aa gaya1.surprise
‘Khuda yaad aa gaya’ is also an expression to say ‘has something bad happened to you that you suddenly remembered god’. Going to masjid is also ‘remembering’ god. Thus this is a nice play on words. I am surprised to see in the masjid O, Khumaar. What happened, how come you suddenly remembered god.
