Tarannum
is vaqt to lagta hai – faiz ahmed faiz
Click here for overall comments and on any passage for word meanings and discussion. faiz wrote this at a moment of extreme loneliness. He was in jail, had a serious heart attack and was taken to the hospital and was by himself. He writes about bewilderment/loss of several sensations, feelings that he would not be able to imagine/compose again, loss of relationships … and yet … he ends with a powerfully optimistic note.

mahtaab, na sooraj, na andhera, na saveraIt is as if the poet has lost a sense of light/time – there is neither moon nor sun (night or day), no light or darkness – it is as if there is nothing.

His eyes are windows and through them he is unable to see/imagine any image of beauty (image of the beloved). In the depths of his heart he does not feel the abode of love.

He likens his imagination to a dense tree and feels that among the branches of this tree, where thoughts/wishes/vision would make nests at one time, now perhaps none will come.

I agree that this desolate moment is very difficult, but after all it is only a moment. Take courage, dear heart, you have the rest of your life to live.
