رام کا نام ۔ منوہر لال بہارؔ

دیکھئے ہوتا ہے کیا اپنا چمن میں انجام
برق نے دیکھ لیا ہے میرے رہنے کا مقام

میں تو پروردۂ گردابِ تلاطم ہوں دوست
رہنے والوں کو مبارک رہے ساحل کا مقام
۳
اُنگلیاں اُٹّھیں ہے جس سمت گُذر جاتا ہوں
گردِشِ عشق نے کچھ ایسا کیا ہے بدنام
۴
تشنگی بُجھتی نہیں اور بھی بڑھ جاتی ہے
اپنی نظروں سے پلا ساقیا تو جام پہ جام
۵
بات دونوں کی اِسی کے لئے ہوتی ہے بہارؔ
نام اللہ کا لب پر ہو کہ ہو رام کا نام

उंग्लियां उट्ठिं हैं जिस सम्त गुज़र जाता हूँ
गर्दिश-ए इश्क़ ने कुछ ऐसा किया है बदनाम

तिश्नगी बुझती नहीं और भी बढ़ जाती है
अपनी नज़्रौं से पिला साक़िया तू जाम पे जाम

बात दोनों कि इसी के लिए होती है बहार
नाम अल्लाह का लब पर हो के हो राम का नाम

इलाही उस चमन पर आग बरसे
चमन वाला जहां फूलौं को तरसे
क़िता – मनोहर लाल बहार
ये क्या बहार, ये क्या है मैकदा साक़ी
शराब पी तो रहे हैं मगर सुरूर नहीं
रह-ए हयात में फिर फैलने लगे साए
फ़रेब-ए सुबह है ये सुबह को ज़हूर नहीं

He was invited to mushaa’era in hyderabad regularly. There are three selections included in a single post. A Ghazal, she’r and qita. The Ghazal is quite conventaional but a couple of ash’aar show strong progressive leaning and there is clear progressive thought in the she’r and the qita.

In traditional urdu poetry lightning seeks out and hits the nest/home of the poet. Here, the poet has been carefully avoiding being seen but now Lightning has seen where he lives and he is fretting what the result will be.

rahne vaaloN ko mubarak rahe saahel4 ka maqaam5 1.reared/nurtured by 2.whirlpool 3.storm 4.shore 5.place
The poet is proud that he has been nurtured by stormy whirlpools and likes the challenges of the open sea. He would leave the safety of the shore to those who prefer it.

apni nazroN se pila saaqiya tu jaam2 pe jaam 1.cup, goblet
Poetic tradition is that the saaqi/wine server of the tavern has beautiful and intoxicating eyes. The poet/lover wants cup after cup of this wine, because his thirst is never slaked but increases even more as he drinks.

baat donoN ki isi ke liye hoti hai bahaar
naam allaah ka lab1 par ho ke ho raam ka naam 1.lips
It doesn’t matter who you pray to, O, bahaar. That is why we have the name of both allah and raam on our lips.

This is probably a disappointment with the policies after independence. Expectations were high, but promises remained unfulfilled. What kind of a spring is this, what kind a tavern, O saaqi. We are drinking wine, but there is not taste/pleasure. Darkness spreads on the path of live. This is an illusion/deception of dawn not the emergence of the sun.
