کبھی نذرِ خاکِ سفر رہی کبھی موتیوں سے بھری رہی

تری اک نگاہ سے ساقیا وہ بہارِ بے خبری رہی
گلِ تر وہی گلِ تر رہا وہی ڈال ڈال ہری رہی

تری بے رخی کی نگاہ تھی کہ جو ہر خطا سے بری رہی
مری آرزو کی شراب تھی کہ جو جام جام بھری رہی

دمِ مرگ بھی مری حسرتیں حدِ آرزو سے نہ بڑھ سکیں
اسی کالے دیو کی قید میں مرے بچپنے کی پری رہی

دلِ غمزدہ پہ گزر گیا ہے وہ حادثہ کہ مرے لیے
نہ تو غم رہا نہ خوشی رہی نہ جنوں رہا نہ پری رہی

गुल-ए तर वही गुल-ए तर रहा वही डाल डाल हरी रही

तेरी बे-रुख़ी की निगाह थी के जो हर ख़ता से बरी रही
मेरी आर्ज़ू की शराब थी के जो जाम जाम भरी रही

दम-ए मर्ग भी मेरी हस्रतें हद-ए आर्ज़ू से न बढ़ सकीं
उसी काले देव की क़ैद में मेरे बचपने की परी रही

दिल-ए ग़म-ज़दा पे गुज़र गया है वो हादसा के मेरे लिए
न तो ग़म रहा न ख़ुशी रही न जुनूँ रहा न परी रही

There are conflicting records about the date of birth, but 1928 appears more credible. BA LLB from lucknow. He worked in various legal and administrative positions. Started composing around 1949. Brother of kishan bihari noor. Lived in mumbaii and composed lyrics for the film industry. This is in the same zamin as safi auraNgabadi’s famous Ghazal ‘be-Khabari rahi’. In the path of love everything is on a journey, even the pain of life. Sometimes it falls to the ground and becomes a sacrificial offering to the soil, at other times the eyes are brimming with pearly tears. Thus these tears of pain too are transient.

One glance of the saaqi (divine beloved) was enough to bring intense joy and transform the poet/lover/sufi into a mystic trance. The spring of joyous mysticism lasted long – every flower remained fresh, every branch remained green.

The beloved always casts a casual, uncaring glance upon the lover/admirer but remains above all reproach. The intense desire of the poet like the wine of love fills every cup, every moment of his life. The implication is that cups are always full, never consumed i.e., his desire remains unfulfilled.

The poet/lover has nurtured his love from childhood. It has been like an angel for him throughout his life. But it has always been a captive of the demon (who prevents the fulfilment of his desires). Even at the time of death it remained within the limits of (unfulfilled) desire (did not reach realization), remained captive of the demon.
