نہ ہو کوئی ہمراز ۔ پنڈت امرناتھ ساحرؔ دہلوی

میری نظر میں ہیں دنیا کے سب نشیب و فراز
یقیں نہ آئے تو سن لو میری زباں سے یہ راز
۲
کہ شاہراہ دکھا کر گئے ہیں اہلِ طریق
زمانہ ہا تو نہ سازد تو با زمانہ بہ ساز
۳
وہ نیک مردِ مجرّد ہے جس کا عالم میں
نہ ہم نفس ہو کوئی اور نہ ہو کوئی ہمراز

بجا ہے کہئے جو اِنساں اُسے کہ تا اِمکاں
مصیبتوں میں جو ہر اک کا ہو سکے دم ساز

ہمیشہ دہر میں اُس کا بہ خیر ہے انجام
کرے جو نیک اِرادت سے کام کا آغاز

جو اہلِ دل ہیں سمجھتے ہیں حسن و عشق کے رمز
کسی کا طرزِ عمل ناز ہے کسی کا نیاز

دوئی کے رنگِ اثر سے جو دل ہے مُستغنی
نظر میں پیرِ طریقت کے ہے وہ مایۂ ناز

वो नेक मर्द-ए मुजर्रद है जिस का आलम में
न हम-नफ़स हो कोई और न हो कोई हम-राज़

बजा है कहिये जो इन्सां उसे के ता-इम्कां
मुसीबतौं में जो हर एक का हो सके दम-साज़

हमेशा दहर में उस का ब-ख़ैर है अंजाम
करे जो नेक इरादत से काम का आग़ाज़

जो अहल-ए दिल हैं समझते हैं हुस्न ओ इश्क़ के रम्ज़
किसी का तर्ज़-ए अमल नाज़ है किसी का नियाज़

दोई के रंग-ए असर से जो दिल है मुस्तग़्नी
नज़र में पीर-ए तरीक़त के है वो माया-ए नाज़
८
न होशियार है साहर न मस्त अए साक़ी
वो तालब एक निगह-ए मस्त का है बंदा-नवाज़

This is one of a series of Ghazal styled after Ghalib’s Ghair mudarraf Ghazal “maiN huN apni shikast ki aavaaz”.

That those who knew the way have shown us the main path. You do not shape the times, you are shaped by the times.

na hum-nafas4 ho koii aur na ho koii hum-raaz5 1.virtuous, good 2.rejected/expelled/exposed/vulnerable person 3.world 4.same breath i.e., friend 5.confidant, sharing trust
The person who has been rejected by the world, who is vulnerable, friendless and without a trustworthy/trusting companion, may be a virtuous person.

musiibatoN3 meN jo har ek ka ho sake dam-saaz4 1.appropriate, fitting 2.to the extent possible 3.difficulties 4.helper
It is fitting that that person be called human who, to the extent possible, helps those who are in difficuties.

kare jo nek4 iraadat5 se kaam ka aaGhaaz6 1.world 2.good 3.result 4.virtuous 5.intentions 6.beginning
In this world, always their result/reward is good who begin their work with virtuous intentions.

jo ahl-e-dil1 haiN samajhte haiN husn o ishq ke ramz2
kisi ka tarz3-e amal4 naaz5 hai kisi ka niyaaz6 1.people of heart/love 2.clues, secrets 3.ways, methods 4.actions 5.coquetry 6.offerings, tribute
In urdu poetic tradition, ‘naaz/husn’ is usually associated with the beloved (or god) and ‘niyaaz/ishq’ with the lover (or devotee). Thus, people who understand the subtle clues/signs that pass between the beloved (or god) and lover (or devotee), know that one style is that of ‘naaz-coquetry’ and another of devotion/prayer.

‘Duality’ is used in the sufiyaana and vedic sense of ‘vahdat-ul-vujood’ and ‘advaita’. In the eyes of the elders of the tradition, the heart that is unmindful of i.e., has overcome, the effects of duality is treasured with pride and joy.

na hoshiyaar1 hai saahir2 na mast3 aye saaqi
vo taalib4 ek nigah5-e mast3 ka hai banda-navaaz6 1.aware, sober 2.pen-name of poet 3.intoxicated 4.seeker 5.glance 6.a term of respect equivalent to ‘you are my patron-I am your servant’, lord
O saaqi/banda-navaaz, saahir is neither sober nor intoxicated (with conventional wine). All he seeks is the intoxication of your glance. The saaqi could be god.
