اشکِ چکیدہ ہوں ۔ خواجہ میر دردؔ

مژگانِ تر ہوں یا رگِ تاکِ بریدہ ہوں

جو کچھ کہ ہوں سو ہوں غرض آفت رسیدہ ہوں

کھینچے ہے دور آپ کو میری فروتنی

افتادہ ہوں پہ سایۂ قدِ کشیدہ ہوں

ہر شام مثلِ شام ہوں میں تیرہ روزگار

ہر صبح مثلِ صبح گریباں دریدہ ہوں

کرتی ہے بوئے گل تو مرے ساتھ اختلاط

پر آہ میں تو موجِ نسیمِ وزیدہ ہوں

چاہے ہے یہ مرا تپشِ دل کہ بعدِ مرگ

کنجِ مزار میں بھی نہ میں آرمیدہ ہوں

اے دردؔ جا چکا ہے مرا کام ضبط سے

میں غم زدہ تو قطرۂ اشکِ چکیدہ ہوں

अश्क-ए चकीदा हूँ – ख़्वाजा मीर दर्द

मिज़्श्गान-ए तर हूँ या रग-ए ताक-ए बुरीदा हूँ

जो कुछ के हूँ सो हूँ ग़रज़ आफ़त-रसीदा हूँ

खींचे है दूर आप को मेरी फ़रोतनी

उफ़्तादा हूँ प साया-ए क़द्द-ए कशीदा हूँ

हर शाम मिस्ल-ए शाम हूँ मैं तीरा-रोज़्गार

हर सुब्ह मिस्ल-ए सुब्ह गरेबाँ-दरीदा हूँ

करती है बू-ए गुल तो मेरे साथ एख़्तलात

पर आह मैं तो मौज-ए नसीम-ए वज़ीदा हूँ

चाहे है ये मेरा तपिश-ए दिल के बा’द-ए मर्ग

कुंज-ए मज़ार में भी न मैं आरमीदा हूँ

अए दर्द जा चुका है मेरा काम ज़ब्त से

मैं ग़म-ज़दा तो क़त्रा-ए अश्क-ए चकीदा हूँ

Religious education under the supervision of his father. Witness invasions of naadir shaah, ahmed shaah abdaali and maraaThas. Mastery of arabi, faarsi and urdu. Expert in Indian music. He shows strong sufi inclinations in his verse.

I am like tearful eyelases, like the vine branch that was pruned/cut off before it could reach maturity. Whatever I may be, I am stricken with calamities (of grief of separation from the beloved).

My humility carries me a long way (gives me high status). Because I submit to the beloved (divine beloved) I am granted this height (the skill of versification). I am of lowly but I cast a shadow like that of a tall stature (my verse is liked and is influential).

har sub’h misl-e sub’h garebaaN-dariida3 huN

Every evening, like the darkness of the evening, my dark fortune makes me sorrowful. Every morning, like the dawn my collar is torn. This is a complicated train of thought. The bright line of dawn is like a tear in the sky, like a torn collar. A torn collar is a sign of distress. Thus, his nights are dark and his mornings are distressed. mohammed raf’ii sauda also expresses a similar thought …

rahta hai sada chaak garebaan-e sahar bhi

The fragrance of the rose tries to mingle with me – shows kindness/love towards me. But alas, I am like a gust of blowing breeze. I cannot make the fragrance a part of me. This could possibly be that the divine beloved is willing shower all kinds of gifts on me, but I am not focused, I keep getting distracted with the material world.

The pain of love in my heart does not spare me even after death. It makes sure that even in the corner of my grave I get no comfort. Even in death I yearn for union with the (divine) beloved.

O dard, my condition has gone beyond the possibility of forbearance/control. I am so grief stricken that I am like flowing tears.
