دامن تعلقات سے عالم کے چیدہ ہوں

مِثلِ جرس کے میں نہ دہانِ دریدہ ہوں

نیں بھولنے کا مثلِ جرس کی فغاں کے تئیں

نالاں ہوں دل اگرچہ لبِ آرمیدہ ہوں

بسمل ہوں دل فگار ہوں اور جاں بہ لب ہوں آہ

صورت عیاں ہے نالہ کی حلقِ بریدہ ہوں

رکھتا ہوں اِس لیے دلِ سوزاں و چشمِ تر

جیوں شمع دردِ داغ سے عشقؔ آفریدہ ہوں

गर्दन-कशीदा हूँ – मिर्ज़ा जमालुल्लाह इश्क़ औरंगाबादी

बाग़-ए जहाँ में सर्व-सा गर्दन-कशीदा हूँ

दामन ता’अल्लुक़ात से आलम के चीदा हूँ

इस क़ाफ़ेले को नाला सुनाने का ज़ौक़ नईं

मिस्ल-ए जरस के मैं न दहान-ए-दरीदा हूँ

नईं भूलने का मिस्ल-ए जरस की फ़ुग़ाँ के तईं

नालाँ हूँ दिल अगरचे लब-ए आरमीदा हूँ

बिस्मिल हूँ दिल-फ़िगार हूँ और जाँ-ब-लब हूँ आह

सूरत अयाँ है नाले की हलक़-ए बुरीदा हूँ

रखता हूँ इस लिए दिल-ए सोज़ाँ ओ चश्म-ए-तर

ज्यूं शम’अ दर्द-ए दाग़ से इश्क़-आफ़्रीदा हूँ

His year of birth is not known but he was a junior contemporary of siraj auraNgabaadi (1712-1764). Ghalib’s Ghazal, “maiN andaleeb-e gulshan-e na-aafriida huN” is in the same style. This Ghazal is linked to the series in ‘Ghalib peshrau hamasr’.

To have or be ‘daaman chiida’ – hem of the robe pulled back is to mean – I don’t get my clothes dirty in such things, I don’t get involved in them. Thus, in this garden i.e. the material world, I hold my head high like a tall cypress. I pull the hem of my robe away from worldly attachments.

I do not have any desire to sound out my wails (recite my Ghazal) to this world (my fellow travellers through this world). I am not one to constantly make a noise/sound like the caravan bell.

The caravan bell constantly laments and complains loudly for everyone to hear. I am not like that. I do not forget that my pain should not come up to the sound of laments. I wail/cry in my heart even though my lips do not move.

A candle is created with a wick. The wick is like its scar of passion/pain. I have been created just like. That is why I have a heart that burns with passion/love and my eyes have dripping/flowing tears.
