چُپکے چُپکے رات دن آنسو بہانا یاد ہے

ہم کو اب تک عاشقی کا وہ زمانہ یاد ہے

 

باہزاراں اِضطراب و صدہزاراں اِشتیاق

تجھ سے وہ پہلے پہل دل کا لگانا یاد ہے

 

بار بار اُٹھنا اُسی جانب نگاہِ شوق کا

اور ترا غُرفے سے وہ آنکھیں لڑانا یاد ہے

 

تُجھ سے ملتے ہی وہ کچھ بے باک ہو جانا مرا

اور ترا دانتوں میں وہ اُنگلی دبانا یاد ہے

 

کھینچ لینا وہ مرا پردے کا کونا دفعتاً

اور دوپٹّے سے ترا وہ منہ چھپانا یاد ہے

 

جان کر سوتا تجھے وہ قصدِ پا بوسی مرا

اور ترا ٹھکرا کے سر، وہ مسکرانا یاد ہے

 

تجھ کو جب تنہا کبھی پانا تو از راہِ لحاظ

حالِ دل باتوں ہی باتوں میں جتانا یاد ہے

 

جب سِوا میرے تمہارا کوئی دیوانہ نہ تھا

سچ کہو کچھ تم کو بھی وہ کارخانہ یاد ہے

 

غیر کی نظروں سے بچ کر سب کی مرضی کے خلاف

وہ ترا چوری چھپے راتوں کو آنا یاد ہے

 

آ گیا گر وصل کی شب بھی کہیں ذکرِ فراق

وہ ترا رو رو کے مجھ کو بھی رُلانا یاد ہے

 

دوپہر کی دھوپ میں میرے بلانے کے لئے

وہ ترا کوٹھے پہ ننگے پاؤں آنا یاد ہے

 

آج تک نظروں میں ہے وہ صحبتِ راز و نیاز

اپنا جانا یاد ہے تیرا بلانا یاد ہے

 

میٹھی میٹھی چھیڑ کر باتیں نِرالی   پیار کی

ذکرِ دُشمن کا وہ باتوں میں اُڑانا یاد ہے

 

دیکھنا مجھ کو جو برگشتہ تو سو سو ناز سے

جب منا لینا تو پھر خود روُٹھ جانا یاد ہے

 

بے رُخی کے ساتھ سُننا دردِ دِل کی داستاں

وہ کلائی میں تیرا کنگن گھمانا یاد ہے

 

وقتِ رخصت الوداع کا لفظ کہنے کے لئے

وہ تیرے سوکھے لبوں کا تھرتھرانا یاد ہے

 

چوری چوری ہم سے تم آ کر ملے تھے جس جگہ

مدّتیں گزریں پر اب تک وہ ٹھکانا یاد ہے

 

شوق میں مہندی کے وہ بے دست و پا ہونا ترا

اور مرا وہ چھیڑنا وہ گُدگُدانا یاد ہے

 

باوجودِ اِدّعائے اِتّقا حسرتؔ مجھے

آج تکِ عہد ہوس کا وہ فسانہ یاد ہے

हम को अब तक आशेक़ी का वो ज़माना याद है

 

बा-हज़ाराँ इज़्तेराब ओ सद-हज़ाराँ इश्तियाक़

तुझ से वो पहले-पहल दिल का लगाना याद है

 

बार बार उठना उसी जानिब निगाह-ए शौक़ का

और तेरा ग़ुर्फ़े से वो आँखें लड़ाना याद है

 

तुझ से कुछ मिलते ही वो बेबाक हो जाना मेरा

और तेरा दाँतों में वो उँगली दबाना याद है

 

खींच लेना वो मेरा पर्दे का कोना दफ़’अतन

और दुपट्टे से तिरा वो मुँह छुपाना याद है

 

जान कर सोता तुझे वो क़स्द-ए पा-बोसी मेरा

और तिरा ठुकरा के सर वो मुस्कुराना याद है

 

तुझ को जब तन्हा कभी पाना तो अज़-राह-ए लेहाज़

हाल-ए दिल बातों ही बातों में जताना याद है

 

जब सिवा मेरे तुम्हारा कोई दीवाना न था

सच कहो कुछ तुम को भी वो कार-ख़ाना याद है

 

ग़ैर की नज़रों से बच कर सब की मर्ज़ी के ख़िलाफ़

वो तेरा चोरी-छुपे रातों को आना याद है

 

आ गया गर वस्ल की शब भी कहीं ज़िक्र-ए फ़िराक़

वो तेरो रो के मुझ को भी रुलाना याद है

 

दोपहर की धूप में मेरे बुलाने के लिए

वो तेरा कोठे पे नंगे पाँव आना याद है

 

आज तक नज़रों में है वो सोहबत-ए राज़-ओ-नियाज़

अपना जाना याद है तेरा बुलाना याद है

 

मीठी मीठी छेड़ कर बातें निराली प्यार की

ज़िक्र दुश्मन का वो बातों में उड़ाना याद है

 

देखना मुझ को जो बरगश्ता तो सौ सौ नाज़ से

जब मना लेना तो फिर ख़ुद रूठ जाना याद है

 

बे-रुख़ी के साथ सुनना दर्द-ए दिल कि दास्ताँ

वो कलाई में तेरा कंगन घुमाना याद है

 

वक़्त-ए रुख़्सत अलविदा का लफ़्ज़ कहने के लिए

वो तेरे सूखे लबौँ का थरथराना याद है

 

चोरी चोरी हम से तुम आ कर मिले थे जिस जगह

मुद्दतें गुज़रीं पर अब तक वो ठिकाना याद है

 

शौक़ में मेहंदी के वो बे-दस्त-ओ-पा होना तेरा

और मेरा वो छेड़ना वो गुदगुदाना याद है

 

बावजूद-ए इद्दे’आ-ए इत्तेक़ा हसरत मुझे

आज तक अहद-ए हवस का वो फ़साना याद है

 

chupke chupke – hasrat mohani

Yet he wrote quite titillating, romantic verse. He was known as ‘maulana’ owing to his religious scholarship and was teassed about his romantic verse. He wittingly took it in stride and persisted in his writing.

chupke chupke1 raat din aaNsu bahaana yaad hai
ham ko ab tak ashiqi ka vo zamaana yaad hai

It is not clear who is shedding tears the poet/lover or the beloved. But during his/her youthful period of romance he remembers the shedding of tears for no apparent reason.

ba-hazaaraN1 iztiraab2 o sad-hazaaraN3 ishtiyaaq 4
tujh se vo pahle-pahal dil ka lagaana yaad hai
1.with a thousand 2.restlessness 3.hundred thousand 4.desires
The poet/lover recalls his first love and restlessness and desire that went along with it.

baar baar uThna usi jaanib1 nigah-e-shauq2 ka
aur tera Ghurfe3 se vo aNkheN laRaana yaad hai

The poet/lover again and again casts longing glances at her window and she looks out – their eyes meet.

Young lovers are restrained and careful even if they chance upon each other alone. Respecting this tradition of constraint, the poet/lover is restricted to insisting/claiming/expressing his love only in words.

sach kaho kuchh tum ko bhi vo kaar-Khaana2 yaad hai

There was a time when the beloved had no other admirer except the poet/lover. He reminds her of the time and wants to know if she remembers it as well.

She is eager to meet him and wants to send a message and even in the fierce afternoon sun runs up to the rooftop, barefoot.

Even to this day, I see before my eyes that companionship, secrets and playfulness. I remember going everytime you called.

Whenever she saw him upset, she would make-up with a hundred coquetries and having calmed him down, would in turn feign getting offended.
