سحر کے وقت جب اِک مہرباں کرن کی طرح

تو ہسپتال میں آ کر مجھے جگاتی ہے

نصیب میری نگاہوں کے جاگ اُٹھتے ہیں

اُداس اُداس خیالوں کو نیند آتی ہے

خیال آتا ہے آنکھیں تو کھُل چُکیں پھر بھی

کوئی چمکتا ہوا خواب دیکھتا ہوں میں

طلوعِ مہرِ مُنوّر تو ہو چکا لیکن

زمیں کی گود میں مہتاب دیکھتا ہوں میں

خیال آتا ہے یوں ہی خیال ہے ورنہ

حیات کہتے ہیں جس کو وہ صرف غم تو نہیں

یہ ٹھیک ہے کہ اذیّت بہت زیادہ ہے

مگر حیات میں محبوبیت بھی کم تو نہیں

تو آ کے پاس پلاتی ہے جب دوا مجھ کو

حسیں حسیں نظر آتی ہے دُکھ بھری دنیا

بہت وُثُوق سے کہتے ہیں ولولے دل کے

تجھے نہ چھوڑ کے جائیں گے ہم اری دُنیا

کشش کچھ ایسی ہے تجھ میں کہ دیکھ کر تجھ کو

شگفتہ ہوتی ہے آنکھوں میں زندگی کی اُمنگ

ترے جمال میں وہ سادگی ہے تیری قسم

نثار جس پہ زمانے کی ہر بہار کے رنگ

تیری سریلی سی آواز جب بھی سنتا ہوں

تو اک ترانۂ شیریں سُنائی دیتا ہے

ترا وجود ہے اِک ایسا آئینہ جس میں

کوئی فرشتۂ رحمت دکھائی دیتا ہے

نہ جانے کتنے یہاں مجھ سے اور بھی ہوں گے

جو زندہ رہنے کا تجھ سے پیام لیتے ہیں

تیری نگاہ کی ہمدرد مسکراہٹ سے

جو دل فگار ہیں مرہم کا کام لیتے ہیں

ترے خلوص میں پاکیزگی ہے حوروں کی

تو اِس جہان میں فردوس کی نشانی ہے

غمِ حیات کے پھیلے ہوئے اندھیرے میں

تو ایک نرس نہیں روشنی کی رانی ہے

सहर के वक़्त जब एक महरबां किरन की तरह

तु हस्पताल में आ कर मुझे जगाती है

नसीब मेरी निगाहौं के जाग उठते हैं

उदास उदास ख़यालौं को नींद आती है

ख़याल आता है आंखें तो खुल चुकीं फिर भी

कोई चमकता हुआ ख़्वाब देखता हूं मैं

तुलू-ए महर-ए मुनव्वर तो हो चुका लैकिन

ज़मीं कि गोद में महताब देखता हूं मैं

ख़याल आता है यूं ही ख़याल है वरना

हयात कहते हैं जिस को वो सिर्फ़ ग़म तो नहीं

ये ठीक है के अज़िय्यत बहुत ज़्यादा है

मगर हयात में महबूबियत भि कम तो नहीं

तु आ के पास पिलाती है जब दवा मुझ को

हसीं हसीं नज़र आती है दुख भरी दुनिया

बहुत वुसूक़ से कहते हैं वल्वले दिल के

तुझे न छोढ के जाएंगे हम अरी दुनिया

कशिश कुछ ऐसी है तुझ में के देख कर तुझ को

शगुफ़्ता होती है आंखौं में ज़िंदगी कि उमंग

तेरे जमाल में वो सादगी है तेरी क़सम

निसार जिस पे ज़माने कि हर बहार के रंग

तेरी सुरेली सी आवाज़ जब भी सुनता हूं

तो एक तराना-ए शीरीं सुनाई देता है

तेरा वुजूद है एक ऐसा आ’इना जिस में

कोई फ़रिश्ता-ए रहमत दिखाई देता है

न जाने कितने यहां मुझ से और भी होंगे

जो ज़िंदा रहने का तुझ से पयाम लेते हैं

तेरी निगाह कि हमदर्द मुस्कुराहट से

जो दिल फ़िगार हैं मरहम का काम लेते हैं

तेरे ख़ुलूस में पाकीज़गी है हूरौं की

तु इस जहान में फ़िरदौस की निशानी है

ग़म-ए हयात के फैले हुए अंधेरे में

तु एक नर्स नहीं रौशनी की रानी है

Socialist/Communist. Educated and worked in rawalpindi and lahore before partition and then moved to India. He, like majaaz, had taken to excessive drinking and this probably was written during hospitalization as a result of the effects of alcohol. majaaz too has a nazm on the same theme but there is a lot more romanticism is majaaz and much more appreciation/gratitude in this nazm.

nasiib meri nigaahauN3 ke jaag uThte haiN
udaas udaas KhayaaloN ko niind aati hai

When at dawn, you arrive at my hospital bed, like a benevolent ray of light, to wake me up, the fate of eyes awakens (because I can see you). Sad thoughts disappear (go to sleep is used the sense of going in the background, disappearing).

Khayaal aata hai aaNkheN to khul chukiiN phir bhi
koii chamakta hua Khwaab dekhta huN maiN
tuluu1-e mahr2-e munavvar3 to ho chuka laikin
zamiiN ki goad4 meN mahtaab5 dekhta huN maiN   
1.rising 2.sun 3.brilliant 4.lap 5.full moon
Although my eyes are open, it seems to me like I am in a pleasant dream. The brilliant sun has risen but I see the full moon in the lap of the earth (i.e. she is beautiful and cheering like the full moon).

hayaat2 kahte haiN jis ko vo sirf3 Gham to nahiN
ye Theek hai ke aziyyat4 bahut ziyaada5 hai
magar hayaat2 meN mahboobiyat6 bhi kam to nahiN

I begin to think that it is merely a (pessimistic/passing) thought (that life is not worth living), otherwise, life is not only about pain. It may be true that there is a lot of pain, but life also does not have a shortage of caring.

hasiiN1 hasiiN nazar2 aati hai dukh bhari duniya
bahut vusooq3 se kahte haiN valvale4 dil ke
tujhe na chhoR ke jaayeNg hum ari duniya

When you come near to give me my medication, the sorrowful world suddenly begins to look beautiful. The passions in my heart well up and tell me with confidence that I do not really want to leave this world (die).

There is such an attraction in you that the yearning to live blossoms in me. There is such innocence in your beauty that I swear by you that the colour/beauty of every flower of the world should be brought as an offering to you.

tera vujood2 hai ek aisa aa’ina jis meN
koii farishta3-e rahmat4 dikhaaii deta hai

Whenever I hear your musical voice, I hear a song of sweetness. Your very being is a mirror/reflection of an angel of divine grace.

jo zinda rahne ka tujh se payaam1 lete haiN
teri nigaah2 ki hamdard3 muskuraahaT se
jo dil figaar4 haiN marham ka kaam lete haiN

I don’t how many more there are like me who take the message/lesson of life from you. Your smiling/cheerful and sympathetic glance is like balm for broken/hopeless hearts.

tu is jahaan4 meN firdaus5 ki nishaani6 hai
Gham-e hayaat7 ke phaile hue andhera meN
tu ek nurse nahiN raushni ki raani hai    
1.sincerity, caring 2.purity 3.angels 4.world 5.heaven 6.sign 7.life
There is purity of angels in your sincere caring. You are the sign of heaven on earth. In the spreading darkness of the sorrow of life, you are the princess of light.
