اپنی آنکھوں میں کئے ہم نے جگہ خواب کی طرح
اپنے ہم آپ ہی قربان ہیں گرداب کی طرح

آنکھیں رہتی ہیں بھری اشک سے تالاب کی طرح
لختِ دل اس میں پڑے پھرتے ہیں سرخاب کی طرح

ابر کھلتا سا نظر آئے ہے ساقی آ جا
گھونٹ تو ہُو کے میں پیتا ہوں مئے ناب کی طرح

مئے پلا مجھ کو شبِ تار میں آ کر ساقی
عکس پڑتا ہے تجھ عارض کا بھی مہتاب کی طرح

چھاتی بھر آئی ہے بجلی کی تپش دیکھ کے عشقؔ
کہ تڑپتی ہے مرے یہ دلِ بیتاب کی طرح

Just going by the year of his death we can see that he was a junior contemporary of siraj auraNgabaadi (1712-1764) and a slightly preceded Ghalib (1797-1869). This Ghazal is linked to other ham-radeef Ghazal with the radeef ‘ki tarah’ to the icon ‘dulhan ki tarah’ on the ‘radeef-refrain’ page. This Ghazal has heavy mystic/sufiyaana allusions.

apne ham aap hi qurbaan1 haiN girdaab2 ki tarah 1.sacrifice 2.whirlpool
A whirlpool circles itself and sinks into the centre. This might be thought of as self-sacrifice, annihilation, fana, merger with the centre. The poet/sufi too carries a dream in his eyes. The pupil of the eye and its centre might be thought of as a whirlpool. This Khwaab, just like the girdaab is a desire for merger with the divine, with the centre, the source of creation.

‘surKhaab’ is a legendary bird which is supposed to mate for life. If one of the pair dies, the others keeps crying for the mate and finally dives into a lake/whirlpool and kills itself. Thus, the eyes of the poet/sufi too brimming with tears are like a lake. In this lake are pieces of his heart going around in a whirlpool just like the ‘surKhaab’ going for fana/annihilation/merger with the beloved/divine spirit.

The ‘pure wine’ is the mystical wine of love and the saaqi is god. Clouds are breaking up after a spring shower. It is time for renewal and the poet/devotee calls for the saaqi to come (or to call him). He has been sipping the wine of love in anticipation.
