محرم تھا ایک تُو ہی نواہائے راز کا
یاں ورنہ جو حِجاب ہے پردہ ہے ساز کا
۲
اِنساں نہیں ہے وہ، ہے فقط سنگ و خشت جو
قائل نہیں ترے نفسِ جاں گداز کا

تاراج کاوشِ غمِ ہجراں سہی مگر
عالم کچھ اور ہی تھا ترے سوز و ساز کا

تھا منفرد خیال بھی تیرا بیان بھی
قصّہ وہ نازِ عشق کا تھا یا نیاز کا

ہاں! آج اس سے مشرق و مغرب ہیں فیض یاب
سینہ کہ تھا دفینہ گہرہاے راز کا

हां आज इस से मश्रिक़ ओ मग़्रिब हैं फ़ैज़्याब

He has written with much passion about hindu-muslim and India-pakistan accord. A great admirer of iqbal, he wrote several books on him. Here he pays tribute to another giant of urdu – Ghalib. This Ghazal is linked to Ghalib naqsh-e qadam.

mahram1 tha tu hi navaa-haa2-e raaz3 ka
yaaN varna4 jo hijaab5 hai parda6 hai saaz7 ka 1.intimate, familiar 2.sounds 3.secret 4.otherwise 5.veil 6.sheet 7.music, harmony
You alone were intimate with the sounds of secrets (of the universe). Otherwise, here, the veil (which hides the secrets of the universe) is like a sheet of music (which we could not read, but only you could and compose music for us). See Ghalib’s own misra “mahram nahiN hai tu hi navaa-haa-e raaz ka”.

insaaN nahiN hai vo hai faqat8 saNg9 o Khisht10 jo
qaa’el11 nahiN tere nafas12-e jaaN-gudaaz13 ka 8.only 9.rock 10.brick 11.convinced, agreeing 12.breath 13.soul wrenching
They are not human, but only hard-hearted like rock and brick, who are not convinced by your soul-wrenching breath/sound. This takes after ‘dil hi to hai, na saNg o Khisht’.

aalam4 kuchh aur hi tha tere soz-o-saaz5 ka 1.destroyed, ruined 2.effort 3.sorrow of separation (from the beloved) 4.world, times 5.passion and music/verse
In urdu mystic poetry ‘hijr’ – separation from the beloved could also mean separation from the divine – from the one-ness of creation with the creator. You may have been ruined/consumed by your effort and separation from the beloved (from the divine), but still your world of passion and verse was something else.

tha munfarid6 Khayaal bhi tera bayaan bhi
qissa vo naaz-e-ishq7 ka tha ya niyaaz8 ka 6.distinct, unique 7.pride in the passion of (mystic) love 8.offering
Both your thought and your words were unique, different from everyone else, whether it be about your pride in (divine) love or your offering of yourself (to the beloved).

seena ke tha dafeena4 gohar-haa5-e raaz6 ka 1.east 2.west 3.blessed 4.buried treasure 5.jewels 6.secrets
Even to this day the world is blessed because of your words. Your bosom was a treasure of jewels of the secrets of the universe.
