gorakh dhanda-01 – naz Khialvi

Part 1

Click here for overall comments and on any passage for meanings and discussion.  I could not find any authentic written version. This has been compiled from sources that wrote it down from nusrat fateh ali Khan’s qawwali performance. There were many errors, some serious. I have attempted to correct them (perhaps commit some of my own in the process). Typically in a qawwali, peripherally related asha’ar of other poets are inserted by the singer. Some of those may still be in here. Overall – a highly enjoyable sufi composition, even if not exactly a chaste urdu classical literary structure.

I have searched for you in temple and mosque, but you are not to be found there. But I have seen you enthroned in my heart (so you must be real). Searching does not lead to you, no amount of searching helps and the puzzle is that you are right where we are. You are one tricky business.

He/she who is immerserd in love, only such a one has achieved something. You are not to be found either in the house of idols nor in the house of god but in the heart that has love. You become “non-existent” and disappear somewhere then you become manifest and appear somewhere else.

1.refusal 2.denial 3.life, existence
If you are not, then how can refusal be meaningful. Denial itself is evidence of your being. That which I call “me” (my existence), if is not (a part of) “you”, then what is it. If you did not even come into my thoughts, how would I have been able to conceive that there is a god. You are one tricky business.

1.without limit, infinite
I am confused about what and who you are. If I can get my hands on you, you are an idol. If I cannot then you are god. If I could comprehend you (if my mind could encircle you) then how could you be infinite. If I could understand you, then how could you be god.

The philosopher does not find god in logical argument. He tries to untangle the string, but cannot find the beginning or end. You claim that you are not confined to one place but isn’t it strange that you reside in a loving heart. You are one tricky business.

Thus … you don’t quite hide and you don’t come out in the open. You are manifest yet you don’t show yourselves. You do not solve the conflicts of temple and mosque.

You are not faithful, that is why you don’t tell us (don’t decide and keep all these places going/keep us guessing about your real intentions). You are one tricky business.

You give the bird of ambition the power of flight and then spread the net of fate in all directions (all our plans are to naught – is it fate or free will?). You have this beautiful world and have plans to destroy it all. You claim that you are not confined to one place, yet you send a message that you are so close to us that watch everything we do.

This is good, that is bad, this is hell, that is heaven, pray do tell me what is the use of all this nonsense.  Adam committed the first sin (of eating the forbidden fruit) and you punish his progeny.  What kind of justice is this.

You made man your representative on earth, yet he has no real powers.  What kind of a game is this.  You made everyone so that they may know you, yet you have hidden yourselves from everyone’s eyes.  You are one tricky business.

    1. Thank you. I was hoping for a written version. It is tough to transcribe, but I will try. Thanks.

    1. Thanks for your interest. I have not been able to find a written version. I painstakingly wrote it down from various audio recordings. If you find a complete version, I would appreciate getting it. Thanks.

        1. I am sorry, I don’t have a handwritten or print version. I am looking for one. I transcribed it painstakingly from recordings.
