حسین کی ہے ۔ بشویشور پرشاد منوّرؔ لکھنوی

نگاہِ یزداں میں خاص عظمت شہیدِ اعظم حسین کی ہے

جو ہے شہادت تو بس شہادت شہیدِ اعظم حسین کی ہے

ہے عزم شاہد، یقین شاہد، ہے کربلا کی زمین شاہد

جو ہے شجاعت تو بس شجاعت شہیدِ اعظم حسین کی ہے

وِغا میں فرقِ نماز خم ہے، نہیں جھکا سر یہ زیرِ خنجر

جو ہے عبادت تو بس عبادت، شہیدِ اعظم حسین کی ہے

نہ اب یہ محدود ہے عرب تک نہ اب یہ محدود ہے عجم تک

تمام دنیا میں آج عظمت شہیدِ اعظم حسین کی ہے

لگائے سینے سے کیوں نہ اِس کو ہے جس کے پہلو میں دل منوّرؔ

کہ غم تو اک بے بہا امانت شہیدِ اعظم حسین کی ہے

हुसैन की है – बिश्वेश्वर परशाद मुनव्वर लखनवी

निगाह-ए यज़दां में ख़ास अज़्मत शहीद-ए आज़म हुसैन की है

जो है शहादत तो बस शहादत, शहीद-ए आज़म हुसैन की है

है अज़्म शाहेद, यक़ीन शाहेद, है करबला की ज़मीन शाहेद

जो है शुजा’अत तो बस शुजा’अत, शहीद-ए आज़म हुसैन की है

वेग़ा में फ़र्क़-ए नमाज़ ख़म है, नहीं झुका सर ये ज़ेर-ए ख़ंजर

जो है इबादत तो बस इबादत, शहीद-ए आज़म हुसैन की है

न अब ये महदूद है अरब तक, न अब ये महदूद है अजम तक

तमाम दुनिया में आज अज़्मत, शहीद-ए आज़म हुसैन की है

लगाये सीने से क्यूं न इस को, है जिस के पहलू में दिल मुनव्वर

के ग़म तो एक बे-बहा अमानत, शहीद-ए आज़म हुसैन की है

 

Click here for background and on any passage for word meanings and explanatory discussion. munshi bishweshwar prasad munavvar lakhnavi (1897-1970). He was a scholar of arabi, faarsi, urdu, and hindi. His father, munshi dwarka prasad ufaq was also a great poet who recomposed the ramayan in urdu using the same qaafiya for more than 6000 ash’aar. He himself re-composed the bhagwad gita in chaste urdu. He credits urdu with “saving the hindu religion” because of the many translations of hindu religious texts into urdu because that was the language that more north Indian hindus could relate to, rather than avadhi or sanskrit. This is a segment of a longer musaddas that he composed as a tribute to husain, grandson of mohammed who was martyred in karbala.

jo hai shahaadat7 to bas shahaadat, shahiid-e aazam husain ki hai

In the eyes of god there is a special respect for the greatest martyr, husain. If there is a martyrdom, then it is the martyrdom of the greatest martyr, husain.

jo hai shujaa’at4 to bas shujaa’at, shahiid-e aazam husain ki hai

Steadfast determination itself bears witness, faith bears witness and the land of karbala bears witness that if there is courage it is the courage of the greatest martyr, husain.

jo hai ibaadat6 to bas ibaadat, shahiid-e aazam husain ki hai

tamaam3 duniya meN aaj azmat4, shahiid-e aazam husain ki hai

It is not limited to arabatan. Neither is it limited to the surrounding lands. Today, the fame and greatness that is spread all over the world is the greatness of the greatest martyr, husain.

lagaaye seene se kyuN na is ko, hai jis ke pahlu1 meN dil munavvar2
ke Gham to ek be-bahaa3 amaanat4, shahiid-e aazam husain ki hai

Why should they not hold it tight to their bosom, those who have (loving) heart, O, munavvar – and this has a wonderful double meaning – those who have a heart that shines with the spirit of truth, because the pain and sorrow of the martyrdom of husain is an invaluable trust given to us by the greatest martyr, husain.
