सदा-ए-तीशा-ए-मज़्दूर है तेरा नग़्मा

तू संग-ओ-ख़िश्त से चंग-ओ-रबाब पैदा कर

बहुत लतीफ़ है ऐ दोस्त तेग़ का बोसा

यही है जान-ए-जहाँ इस में आब पैदा कर

तेरे क़दम पे नज़र आए महफ़िल-ए-अंजुम

वो बाँकपन वो अछूता शबाब पैदा कर

तेरा शबाब अमानत है सारी दुनिया की

तू ख़ार-ज़ार-ए-जहाँ में गुलाब पैदा कर

सुकून ख़्वाब है बे-दस्त-ओ-पा ज़ईफ़ी का

तू इज़्तेराब है ख़ुद इज़्तेराब पैदा कर

न देख ज़ोहद की तू इस्मत-ए-गुनह-आलूद

गुनह में फ़ित्रत-ए-इस्मत-मआब पैदा कर

He was a progressive and a heart-throb. Very active in the Progressive Writers’ Association, he taught at aligaRh. He died way too young, probably because of excessive drinking.

‘hameN’ and ‘hamaaua’ refers to his generation. Note that he was 44 when he died and must have been younger when he wrote this. He is willing to sacrifice that generation as a retribution for what they have done. Trample us underfoot and proceed. Give us our due answer/retribution.
