Click here for overall comments and on any she’r for word meanings and discussion. sikandar ali vajd (1914-1983) was a progressive, thoughtful poet from hyderabad, and a contemporary of maKhdoom. He qualified for the Hyderabad Civil Service and served as munsif magistrate and later as sessions judge. He got absorbed into the maharashTra state service when auraNgabad was split away from the erstwhile hyderabad state into maharashTra. He was elected to the rajya sabha and awarded padma shri. Unlike my previous impression which was based on a reading of his political compositions, I have come to realize that there is a healthy sufiyaana content in vajd’s composition. This is a very simple Ghazal with great beauty in its simplicity and which brings on a flood of memories (at least for me). Oh, how much have we received! and all we can do is remember and miss them.

I remember those shining lights who lit up the world of love.

jin ki aaNkhauN meN tha suroor1-e Ghazal
un GhazaalauN2 ki yaad aati hai1.joy 2.Ghazal singers/poets
Ghazal here is a metaphor for refined taste whether of poetry/literature or customs/traditions … any refined taste. Thus I remember those who carried the joy of refined taste (of this or that) in their eyes and passed it on to us.
5
saadagi1 laajavaab2 thi jin ki
un savaalauN ki yaad aati hai1.simplicity 2.incomparable/unanswerable
This could possibly be simple/naïve questions that the poet/child asked of his elders or that the beloved used to ask the poet/lover. The questions were simple, the answers, perhaps not. Thus the poet/child/lover remembers those incomparable/unanswerable questions of yore.
