اُسی ناسپاس نے ہائے اب اسے جامِ مرگ پلا دیا

اسے اِتّباعِ مسیح نے وہ عجیب دستِ شفا دیا
جو گرے تھے ان کو اٹھا دیا جو مرے تھے ان کو جلا دیا

جو اٹھا تھا شعلۂ شور و شر اسے اپنے خوں سے بجھا دیا
جو پڑا تھا پردہ نگاہوں میں اسے آپ اٹھ کے اٹھا دیا
وہ خمیدہ قد خمِ ماہِ نو وہ نظر فریب خنک سی ضو
وہ نگاہ برقِ عمل کی رو کہ دلوں کو جس نے ہلا دیا

وہ فروغ بخش ہر انجمن کہ زمانہ بھر میں تھا ضو فگن
وہ چراغِ بزم گہ وطن کسی تیرہ دل نے بجھا دیا
وہ کتابِ صلح کا سر ورق کہ مٹائی کشمکشِ فرق
وہ قتیلِ خنجر صبر و حق کہ وطن پہ خود کو مٹا دیا

وہ بودھ اور کرشن کا جا نشیں ہمہ تن عمل ہمہ تن یقیں
وہ تبسمِ سحر آفریں کہ چمن لبوں سے کِھلا دیا
وہ برنگِ آئینہ صاف دل وہ فروغِ فطرتِ آب و گِل
کہ جہادِ نفس نے مستقل اُسے اور حُسنِ جِلا دیا

وہ جلالِ شیوۂ سادگی وہ جمالِ صورت زندگی
وہ زُلالِ چشمۂ آگہی کہ زمانہ بھر کو جگا دیا
وہ شرارہ برق حیات کا وہ ستارا راہِ نجات کا
وہ منارہ عزم و ثبات کا جسے فتنہ ساز نے ڈھا دیا

اثر اس کا اب ہے وسیع تر کہ ہر ایک دل میں ہے اس کا گھر
یہ سمجھ کے خوش نہ ہوں فتنہ گر کہ اُسے پیامِ فنا دیا
تری شان کون گھٹا سکے اسے خود خدا نے بڑھا دیا
کہ تجھے بقائے دوام دی تجھے منصبِ شہدا دیا

تری خامشی وہ زبان تھی کہ دلوں کو جوشِ نوا دیا
تنِ فاقہ کش میں وہ جان تھی کہ حصارِ کِبر ہلا دیا
وطنِ عزیز کو شان دی اسے قیدِ غم سے چھڑا دیا
رہِ اِتّحاد میں جان دی جو کہا وہ کر کے دکھا دیا

تری نیکیوں نے تری قسم سرِ خود سری کو جھکا دیا
یہ عروسِ کِشورِ ہند تھی ہمہ بیکسی ہمہ بد دلی
اسے تو نے غازۂ خُرّمی ترے خوں نے رنگِ حِنا دیا

تجھے مسجدوں نے دعائیں دیں کہ تباہیوں سے بچا دیا
یہ کمالِ پیرویِ علی یہ فَراخِ حوصلگی تری
کہ خود اپنے دشمنِ جاں کو بھی وہی ارمغانِ دعا دیا

تجھے بیکسی نے سپاہ دی تجھے مشکلات نے راہ دی
تجھے بجلیوں نے پناہ دی تجھے تلخیوں نے مزا دیا
یہی دھرم ہے یہی اصلِ دیں کہ ہو قول سچ تو عمل حسیں
حق و اہلِ حق پہ رہے یقیں یہ پیام سب کو سنا دیا

تری روحِ شمع تھی گُل ہوئی ترے تن کو پھول بنا دیا

उसी ना-सिपास ने हाए अब उसे जाम-ए मर्ग पिला दिया

हमें जिस ने फ़त्ह दिलाई थी उसे ख़ाक-ओ-ख़ूँ में मिला दिया
हमें जिस ने राह दिखाई थी उसे रास्ते से हटा दिया
उसे इत्तबा-ए मसीह ने वो अजीब दस्त-ए शफ़ा दिया
जो गिरे थे उन को उठा दिया जो मरे थे उन को जिला दिया

जो उठा था शो’ला-ए शोर-ओ-शर उसे अपने ख़ूँ से बुझा दिया
जो पड़ा था पर्दा निगाहों में उसे आप उठ के उठा दिया
वो ख़मीदा-क़द ख़म-ए माह-ए नौ वो नज़र-फ़रेब ख़ुनक सी ज़ौ
वो निगाह-ए बर्क़-ए अमल की रौ के दिलों को जिस ने हिला दिया

वो फ़रोग़-बख़्श-ए हर-अंजुमन के ज़माना-भर में था ज़ौ-फ़गन
वो चराग़-ए बज़्म गह-ए वतन किसी तीरा-दिल ने बुझा दिया
वो किताब-ए सुल्ह का सर-वरक़ के मिटाई कश्मकश-ए फ़रक़
वो क़तील-ए ख़ंजर-ए सब्र-ओ-हक़ के वतन पे ख़ुद को मिटा दिया

वो बोध और कृष्न का जा-नशीं हम’अ-तन अमल हम’अ-तन यक़ीं
वो तबस्सुम-ए सहर-आफ़्रीं के चमन लबों से खिला दिया
वो ब-रंग-ए आईना साफ़-दिल वो फ़रोग़-ए फ़ित्रत-ए आब-ओ-गिल
के जेहाद-ए नफ़्स ने मुस्तक़िल उसे और हुस्न-ए जिला दिया

वो जलाल-ए शेवा-ए सादगी वो जमाल-ए सूरत-ए ज़िंदगी
वो ज़ुलाल-ए चश्मा-ए आगही के ज़माना-भर को जगा दिया
वो शरारा बर्क़-ए हयात का वो सितारा राह-ए नजात का
वो मनारा अज़्म-ओ-सबात का जिसे फ़ित्ना-साज़ ने ढा दिया

असर उस का अब है वस’ई-तर के हर एक दिल में है उस का घर
ये समझ के ख़ुश न हों फ़ित्ना-गर के उसे पयाम-ए फ़ना दिया
तेरी शान कौन घटा सके उसे ख़ुद ख़ुदा ने बढ़ा दिया
के तुझे बक़ा-ए दवाम दी तुझे मंसब-ए शोहदा दिया

तेरी ख़ामुशी वो ज़बान थी के दिलों को जोश-ए नवा दिया
तन-ए फ़ाक़ा-कश में वो जान थी के हिसार-ए किब्र हिला दिया
वतन-ए अज़ीज़ को शान दी उसे क़ैद-ए ग़म से छुड़ा दिया
रह-ए इत्तहाद में जान दी जो कहा वो कर के दिखा दिया

जिन्हें ज़ेर कर न सका सितम हुए सैद-ए सिलसिला-ए करम
तेरी नेकियों ने तेरी क़सम सर-ए ख़ुद-सरी को झुका दिया
ये उरूस-ए किशवर-ए हिन्द थी हम’अ बेकसी हम’अ बद-दिली
उसे तू ने ग़ाज़ा-ए ख़ुर्रमी तेरे ख़ूँ ने रंग-ए हिना दिया

तुझे मंदिरों ने सदाएँ दीं के तेरे करम से अमाँ मिली
तुझे मस्जिदों ने दुआएँ दीं के तबाहियों से बचा दिया
ये कमाल-ए पैरवी-ए अली ये फ़राख़-ए हौसलगी तेरी
के ख़ुद अपने दुश्मन-ए जाँ को भी वही अर्मुग़ान-ए दुआ दिया

तुझे बेकसी ने सिपाह दी तुझे मुश्किलात ने राह दी
तुझे बिज्लियों ने पनाह दी तुझे तल्ख़ियों ने मज़ा दिया
यही धर्म है यही अस्ल-ए दीं के हो क़ौल सच तो अमल हसीं
हक़-ओ-अहल-ए हक़ पे रहे यक़ीं ये पयाम सब को सुना दिया

तेरी रूह शम’अ थी गुल हुई तेरे तन को फूल बना दिया
तेरा फ़ैज़ दहर में आम हो ये ग़ुबार उठ के ग़माम हो
तेरी ख़ाक तेरा पयाम हो ये समझ के इस को बहा दिया

He gave us victory and we threw him in the dust, spilled his blood. He showed us the way and we removed him from the path. He followed the example of Jesus and was given the miracle of healing. He raised the fallen, brought back the dead to life.

Now the impact of his life is even stronger (editorial – such naïve optimism), because he has made a home in every heart. The evil doers should not be happy thinking that they have delivered the message of annihilation to him. That which power could not subdue, your love captivated. Your virtues got obstinacy to bow its head. Both of theses misra refer to the victory of non-violent resistance. The domain of hindustan was like a helpless bride with ill-will between families. You made her happy and applied rouge to her beautiful face. It was your blood that gave the colour of henna to her palms.

Temples called to you because it was your kindness that kept them safe. Mosques offered prayers for you because you saved them from destruction. Here the poet uses the common belief that ali (the son in law of mohammed) was very open-hearted/generous in his courage and offered prayers for his killer. Thus, you (gandhi) following the example of ali, offered the gift of prayers to your enemies.

That which power could not subdue, your love captivated. Your virtues got obstinacy to bow its head. Both of theses misra refer to the victory of non-violent resistance. The domain of hindustan was like a helpless bride with ill-will between families. You made her happy and applied rouge to her beautiful face. It was your blood that gave the colour of henna to her palms.

Temples called to you because it was your kindness that kept them safe. Mosques offered prayers for you because you saved them from destruction. Here the poet uses the common belief that ali (the son in law of mohammed) was very open-hearted/generous in his courage and offered prayers for his killer. Thus, you (gandhi) following the example of ali, offered the gift of prayers to your enemies.

Helplessness itself was your force. Difficulties created a way for you. Lightning protected you. Bitterness offered sweet taste. You gave the message to one and all that the call of duty and real faith lay in being truthful in word and good in action, that we should place our trust in Truth and people (leaders/teachers) of Truth (no matter what their religion).
