حسن کی رنگینیوں کا ذکر ہر محفل میں ہے

شوق کا طوفاں نہاں لیکن سکوتِ دل میں ہے

رہگزر بھی، راہرو بھی، راہبر بھی، دل سدا

گر کسی منزل میں ہے تو شوق کی منزل میں ہے

تم نے دیکھا ہے تبسّم، رنگ اور رعنائیاں

زخم بھی دیکھا کبھی جو پھول کے بھی دل میں ہے

وہ بھی مجبورِ وفا ہے میں بھی مجبورِ وفا

میں بھی کس مشکل میں ہوں اور وہ بھی کس مشکل میں ہے

وہ تبسّم، وہ نگہ اور وہ ادائیں خاص خاص

روشنی کن کن چراغوں کی نہ جانے دل میں ہے

تا دمِ آخر رہیں گے حسرتوں کے سلسلے

ایک حسرت دل سے نکلی، ایک حسرت دل میں ہے

چل رہا ہوں میں اگرچہ کارواں کے ساتھ ساتھ

ایک تنہائی کا عالم ہر قدم پر دل میں ہے

हुस्न की रंगीनियों का ज़िक्र हर महफ़िल में है

शौक़ का तूफां नेहां लेकिन सुकूत-ए दिल में है

रहगुज़र भी, राह-रौ भी, राहबर भी दिल सदा

गर किसी मंज़िल में है तो शौक़ की मंज़िल में है

तुमने देखा है तबस्सुम, रंग और रानाइयां

जख़्म भी देखा कभी जो फूल के भी दिल में है

वो भी मजबूर-ए वफ़ा, मैं भी मजबूर-ए वफ़ा

मैं भी किस मुश्किल में हूं और वो भी किस मुश्किल में है

वो तबस्सुम, वो निगह और वो अदाएं ख़ास ख़ास

रौशनी किन-किन चराग़ौं कि न जाने दिल में है

ता दम-ए आख़र रहेंगे हसरतों के सिलसिले

एक हसरत दिल से निकली एक हसरत दिल में है

चल रहा हूं मैं अगरचे कारवां के साथ साथ

एक तन्हाई का आलम हर क़दम पर दिल में है

रहने दो लहरों प मेरी कश्ती-ए कोहना हबीब

ख़ूगर-ए तूफ़ां की तुरबत एक कफ़-ए साहिल में है

He was a scholar of sanskrit, English, faarsi and urdu, and was an active participant in the independence struggle, most notably with Khaan abdul Ghaffaar KhaaN. MA from aligaRh and later LLB, law practice 1929. He migrated to India after the partition in 1947. IAS – Collector and later Education Secretary. Early retirement in 1960, but recalled later to serve three more years in jabalpur and retired there. In 1969 he served on Ghalib shataabdhi naagarik samiti which organized four ‘tarahi’ mushaa’era over that year and published a book. He composed several Ghazal in the zamin of Ghalib like this one linked to ‘Ghalib naqsh-e qadam’.

In all gatherings, everyone talks about the beauty/playfulness of the beloved but in the silence/calm of the lover’s heart are hidden many storms (of passion).

The heart itself is the seeker as well as the path along which the search takes it and the guide too. If it is headed for any destination, it is the destination of love. Thus, love/passion (for what?) is the driving force for life.

zaKhm4 bhi dekha kabhi jo phool ke bhi dil meN hai

You have seen the bloom and its many styles and colours. But have you ever stopped to look at the wound in the heart of the flower.

voh bhi majboor1-e vafa2 hai maiN bhi majboor-e vafa
maiN bhi kis mushkil3 meN huN aur voh bhi kis mushkil meN hai

Who is the ‘voh’. It could be the beloved or perhaps the rival. Both the beloved and the poet/lover have made promises. They are bound by those promises. But for some reason the promises cannot be fulfilled, and both are in difficulty. If the rival, then both the poet and the rival are bound by the hopes of fulfilment of the promises that the beloved has made them. But they both know that she will not keep her promise and they are both in difficulty.

raushni kin kin charaaGhoN ki na jaane dil meN hai

The smile, the glance and the special styles of the beloved are all like lamps. They light up the dark/sorrowful heart of the poet/lover. Thus, the light of all these lamps is in his heart.

aek hasrat4 dil se nikli, aek hasrat dil meN hai

Until the last breath there will always be a long series of desires in the heart. If one desire is gone (either because he gives up on it or because it is fulfilled), then another takes its place.

chal raha huN maiN agarchay1 karvaaN ke saath saath
aek tanhaai2 ka aalam3 har qadam4 par dil meN hai

Even though I walk along with everyone in the caravan, there is an overwhelming condition of solitude at every step.

The poet considers himself used to storms. Perhaps he even likes storms. His boat is old and rickety, but he does not want anyone to pull it out. Let it remain in the waves i.e., let me die/drown because the grave of the one used to storms is in a fistful of sand of the shoreline. He wants to continue to face the challenges of life to his last breath.
