kal gayii-faani

کل گئی ۔ فانی بدایونی

 

مانا كہ بات وعدۂ فردا پہ ٹل گئی
اور بے وفا جو کل بھی نہ یہ آج کل گئی

 

اِس خانۂ خراب کی بربادیاں نہ پوچھ
یادَش بَخَیْر آہ بھی دِل سے نکل گئی

 

تم کیوں گئے تھے آئینہ خانہ میں بے حجاب
اچھا ہوا كہ شرم و شرارت میں چل گئی

 

کچھ کہہ كے چارہ ساز نے تسکین دی تو ہے
سنتا ہوں یہ كہ اب میری حالت سنبھل گئی

 

آتی ہے خاکِ جادۂ ہستی سے بوئے دِل
کس آرزو بھرے کی تمنّا نکل گئی

 

دِل کیوں شبِ فراق تڑپ کر ٹھہر گیا
کیوں اِضطراب، کیا تیری صورت بَدَل گئی

 

اِن گردشوں کو روک، كہ دِل خون ہو گیا
ائے آسماں ٹھہر، میری حسرت کچل گئی

 

تعمیرِ آشیاں کی ہوس کا ہے نام برق
جب ہم نے کوئی شاخ چنی ، شاخ جل گئی

 

اللہ ری نوکِ نشترِ غم كی لگاوٹیں
اک اک لہو کی بوند پہ ظالم مچل گئی

 

فانی كے دِل سے آیۂ لا تقنطوا كے بعد
زاہد وہ  دِل فریبیِ حُسنِ عمل گئی

कल गई – फ़ानी बदायूनी

 

माना के बात वादा-ए फ़र्दा पे टल गई

और बे-वफ़ा जो कल भी ना ये आज कल गई

 

इस ख़ाना-ए ख़राब की बरबादियां ना पूछ

यादश बख़ैर आह भी दिल से निकल गई

 

तुम क्यूं गये थे आईना ख़ाने में बे-हिजाब

अच्छा हुआ के शर्म ओ शरारत में चल गई

 

कुच्छ कह के चारा साज़ ने तस्कीन दी तो है

सुनता हुं ये के अब मेरी हालत संभल गई

 

आती है ख़ाक-ए जादा-ए हस्ती से बू-ए दिल

किस आरज़ू भरे की तमन्ना निकल गई

 

दिल क्यूं शब-ए फ़िराक़ तड़प कर ठहर गया

क्यूं इज़्तेराब, क्या तेरी सूरत बदल गई

 

इन गर्दिशों को रोक, के दिल ख़ून हो गया

अये आस्मां ठहर, मेरी हसरत कुचल गई

 

तामीर-ए आशियां की हवस का है नाम बर्क़

जब हम ने कोइ शाख़ चुनी, शाख़ जल गई

 

अल्लाह रे नोक-ए नश्तर-ए ग़म के लगावटें

एक एक लहू की बूँद पे ज़ालिम मचल गई

 

फ़ानी के दिल से आया-ए ला-तूक़्नतू के बाद

ज़ाहिद वो दिल-फ़रेबी-ए हुस्न-ए अमल गई

The poet lover has been seeking meeting/union with the beloved. She keeps promising one in the future but never keeps her promise (hence is faithless). I agree that the problem has been postponed based on your promise of union in the future. But O, faithless what if tomorrow too, today’s pain is not relieved.

is Khaana-e Kharaab1 ki barbaadiyaaN2 na poochh
yaadash-baKhair3 aah4 bhi dil se nikal gayii
1.destroyed house 2.desolation 3.may memory be well 4.sigh
The poet/lover treasures the beloved’s memory in his heart and sighs everytime he remembers her. But now his heart (destroyed house) has become so desolate that even sighs have left it … there is nothing left. May her memory be well, he prays.

tum kyuN gaye the aaiina-Khaane1 meN be-hijaab2
achha hua3 ke sharm4 o sharaarat5 meN chal gayii6
1.hall of mirrors 2.unveiled 3.used in the sense of “serves you right” 4.shyness 5.coy playfulness 6.used in the sense of “got into a fight”
The poet/lover has been telling her not to go into the hall of mirrors unveiled. She does and sees herself all around. One moment she is shy and another she is playfully coy confused by her own beauty. “Serves you right”, says the poet.

kuchh kah ke chaara-saaz1 ne taskeen2 di to hai
sunta huN ye ke ab meri haalat sanbhal gayii
1.saviour, healer 2.comfort, consolation
The poet/lover is stricken so hard with love that he is on his death bed. The healer has been called and has uttered some consoling words. In his delirium the poet/lover hears his friends say that his condition is improving.

aati hai Khaak1-e jaada2-e hasti3 se buu-e dil
kis aarzu-bhare4 ki tamanna5 nikal-gayii6
1.dust of 2.pathway of 3.life, love 4.full of desire 5.longing 6.nikal gayii means to be fulfilled
The poet/lover is on the path of love. His desire is to die an exemplary death with a heart burnt with love. On the pathway of love he smells just such a burning heart (his own) and asks rhetorically “whose heartfelt desire was fulfilled”.

kyuN izteraab3, kya teri soorat badal gayii

The poet/lover’s heart has been pounding during the night of separation. It suddenly seems to have stopped pounding and found a little solace. The poet is surprised and wonders if the shape of restlessness is now different than it used to be, because he is sure he is restless. He cannot be calm during separation.

aye aasmaN Thahr, meri hasrat2 kuchal3 gayii

Urdu poetic convention is that “aasman” – heaven, fate brings bad luck on the lover. The lover heart is being ground up. He protests, O heaven, stop this grinding, my heart bleeds, my desire has been crushed.

ta’amiir1-e aashiyaaN2 ki havas3 ka hai naam barq4
jab hum ne koii shaaKh chuni, shaaKh jal gayii
1.building of 2.nest 3.greed 4.lightning
The poet/lover should have no desire to do anything except attain union with the beloved. Thus the desire/greed of building a nest contains within it the certainty of a lightning strike. As soon as he selectes a branch to build a nest, it is burnt by lightning.

allah re nok1-e nashtar2-e Gham3 ke lagavaTeN4
ek ek lahu5 ki boond pe zaalim machal gayii
1.point of 2.dagger of 3.sorrow, love 4.tastes, pleasures 5.blood
O god, look at the pleasure of the point of the dagger of love. It cuts me up and enjoys the taste of every drop of blood.

faani ke dil se aaya1-e la-tuqnatu2 ke baad
zaahid3 vo dil-farebi4-e husn5-e amal6 gayii
1.verse of the Quran 2.do not despair 3.preacher 4.deception of 5.beauty/expertise of 6.skill, work
The poet is proud of his expertise of versification. But maybe his heart his deceived and he is not really that skillful. He is not getting enough recognition. He derives solace from the Quranic verse, “la tuqnatu” – do not despair (there is hope). Alternatively, an exactly opposite meaning can be drawn. The beloved has been making promises and breaking them. The poet/lover no longer believes her deception. In much the same way he has lost faith in god’s promise given in the verse of “la tuqnatu”.
