Khursheed-e mahshar-faiz

zehra nigaah singing

Khursheed-e mahshar ki lau – faiz ahmed faiz

Click here for overall comments and on any passage for word meanings and discussion.  The rising sun has extensively been used as a metaphor for the coming socialist revolution. faiz could well be talking about that or about the end of military dictatorship.

aaj ke din na poochho mere dosto
duur kitne haiN KhushiyaaN manaane ke din
khul ke haNsne ke din, geet gaane ke din
pyaar karne ke din, dil lagaane ke din
Do not ask my friends, on this (sad) day, how far away are the days when we can be joyous, laugh, sing and love.

aaj ke din na poochho mere dosto

Do not ask today, my friends how many more cuts/wounds the slaughtered animal has in its fate; how many hurdles there are on the pathway to our destination; how many more arrows the killer has still left in his hand/quiver.

Today is an evil day my friends. Today is as if all the old pains and sorrows are headed towards the heart, caravan after caravan. It is as if every rib in the bosom is crying out for help.

Do not ask today, my friends, when your torn, blood stained flags will be useful in ushering in the beautiful face of the sun of the day of reckoning; when will the ocean of blood rise in a flood and wash away today’s sadness – all pain and sorrow, all cruelty and oppression.
