नज़र आता था जलना शम’अ का अरबाब-ए महफ़िल को
ये परवाने से भी पूछा के परवाने पे क्या गुज़री

ये अफ़्साना बरहमन की निगाह-ए यास से सुनिये
के पूजा छोड़ दी मैं ने तो बुत-ख़ाने पे क्या गुज़री

He was popularly known as ‘ustaad’, for his expertise in repairing bicycles, which is how he earned his living initially and later, lived in penury, in spite of his excellence as a poet. He wrote Ghazal is chaste classical style, many of which have been put to music. This is one of series of Ghazal with the same radeef/qaafiya “kya guzri” with qamar jalalavi (two Ghazal), seemab akbarabadi, shakeel badayuni, sikandar ali vajd, saeed shahiidi with more to come. This is transcribed from a youtube posting attributing this Ghazal to qamar jalaalavi. I could not find a print copy of this. So, no authentication. BUT I found a print copy of an intriguingly similar Ghazal with the same radif qaafiyah posted as ‘maiKhaane pe kya guzri’. Even if this is not authentic it is pleasurable to read/hear these two Ghazals to appreciate the variations.

(O, beloved) I was not welcome in your party, but pray ask around what happened after I left. The implication is that the poet/lover was sorely missed after he left/was kicked out.
