آگے بڑھ کر بوسہ لیتا ہوں لبِ شمشیر کا

آج قائل ہوگیا میں عشق کی تاثیر کا

Both father and grandfather were poets and scholars of urdu and faarsi. He started composing at the age of 13-14. His father died in 1906 and he moved to bhopal for work and returned to dehli in 1910 to re-start his family practice, establishing a clinic named ‘daar-ul-shifa’. He died in 1922 before he could publish his diivaan, but his son collected his papers and published it. His brother, kaviraj raghunandan singh saahir wrote the preface. In addition to his diivan, there is a collection of his Ghazal called, ‘Ghalib aur haajir’, all composed in the zamin of Ghalib. This Ghazal in the zamin of ‘shooKhi-e tahriir ka’ is linked to that category under the icon ‘Ghalib naqsh-e qadam’, on the Theme page. It is a rather long Ghazal (45 ash’aar) and is posted in four parts for easy reading/listening.

For the heartbroken lover to complain about the pain of separation is useless. The evidence of this is the quiet (mocking) smile of the beloved’s picture.

I would never have agreed with the beloved of unparalleled beauty demanded. But what can I do, I am bound by what is written in my fate.

The poet/lover’s plan to get the attention of the beloved has failed. How can he blame her for it. This is the work of his twisted fate.

Khabt3 ho jaata hai mazmuN4 bhi meri tahriir5 ka 1.curly tresses 2.imagination 3.addiction, obsession 4.topic, theme 5.writing, composition
Look at the condition I have been reduced to because of thinking about the beloved’s curly hair. Now everytime I write, the theme turns to that as if I am obsessed.

qatl1 hone ka tere haathoN se itna shauq2 hai
aage baRhkar bosa3 leta hun lab-e-shamshiir4 ka 1.to be killed 2.desire, zeal 3.kiss 4.lips of the sword
Oh, how much zeal I have to be killed at your hands. I step forward and kiss the lips/edge of your sword. The tradition in urdu Ghazal is that beloved slaughters her lovers.

As soon as she heard news of my death, she started to cry. Now I am convinced of the effect of my passion.

miT3 nahiN sakta magar likkha hai jo taqdiir ka 1.door 2.rubbing the forehead, prostrate 3.erased
I may rub my forehead a thousand times on the threshold of your door, but what is written in my fate cannot be erased. Clearly getting attention of the beloved is not in his fate.

kya ajab3 paida ho jauhar4 Khaak meN eksiir5 ka 1.mercury bodied, restless, lively 2.step 3.unusual, surprising 4.qualities 5.healing, tonic
Whatever ground that lively, mishievous beloved steps on, why should it surprise us if the dust of that ground turns into elixir.

Come and look at the miraculous effect of imagination (of your beauty). Without actually seeing you, I am able to sketch your picture.
