यकजहती से जीते हैं बाशिंदे रियासत में

मज़्हब को नहीं लाते बेवजह सियासत में

ओणम हो या हो क्रिसमिस, हो ईद या दीवाली

मस्ती में मनाते हैं सब दोस्त ये ख़ुशहाली

है ख़्वान्दगी में अव्वल , हर शख़्स पढ़ा लिखा

कम करते हैं आराएश, पहनावा है सादा सा

तालीम नई है पर तहज़ीब पुरानी है

सदियों से यहां मिलती पुर्खों की निशानी है

करते हैं बहुत मेहनत, परदेस भी जाते हैं

पेशा हो कोई चाहे, वो नाम कमाते हैं

केरल की ये नर्सों को हर-सू है पज़ीराई

बीमार की करतीं जो दिन रात मसीहाई

फ़िल्में जो यहां बनतीं, मक़बूल हैं वो अक्सर

नज़्दीक हैं ये हक़ से, करती हैं असर दिल पर

Elizabeth Kurian ‘Mona’ (1949-living) is a poet in many languages – urdu, English, hindi, and her mother tongue malayalam, with published books in each. A true blue hyderabadi, she is a late comer to urdu, but apparently good at it as well as in love with it. She learnt urdu through a correspondence course offered by jaami’a-e millia islamia, dehli. She has written four urdu books of Ghazal/nazms. She took early retirement from a management position in Reserve Bank of India and now lives in her hometown, hyderabad and pursues her passion in poetry. This is a tribute to the people of her home state – keral.
