ہے  موت  سے  بھی  ساز  وہ  ہوں  زندۂ  جاوید

امرت  کے  اُڑیں  ہوش  وہ  سم  بانٹ  رہا  ہوں

چھیڑی  وہ  غزل  میں  نے  کہ  ہیں  وجد  میں  کونین

اور  یوں  تو  کوئی  کیف  نہ  کم  بانٹ  رہا  ہوں

ہے  مسکنِ  آہوئے  ختن  ہر  دلِ  پُر  کیف

جادو  بھری  آنکھوں  کا  بھرم  بانٹ  رہا  ہوں

پڑتی  ہیں  سرِ  عالمِ  اَسرار  کمندیں

لہرائی  ہوئی  زلف  کے  خَم  بانٹ  رہا  ہوں

افکار  مرے  چیر  گئے  سینۂ  آفاق

اشعار  ہیں  یا  تیغِ  دو  دم  بانٹ  رہا  ہوں

اِس  پردۂ  آواز  سے  پَو  پُھوٹ  رہی  ہے

فردا  کے  جلوسوں  کے  عَلم  بانٹ  رہا  ہوں

ख़ुशियां भी हों क़ुर्बान वो ग़म बांट रहा हुं

एक शो’ला-ए एजाज़-ए रक़म बांट रहा हुं

है नोक पे जादू वो क़लम बांट रहा हुं

है मौत से भी साज़ वो हूं ज़िंदा-ए जावेद

अम्रित के उढें होश वो सम बांट रहा हुं

छेढी वो ग़ज़ल मैं ने के हैं वज्द में कौनैन

और यूं तो कोई कैफ़ न कम बांट रहा हुं

है मिस्कन-ए आहू-ए ख़ुतन हर दिल-ए पुर-कैफ़

जादू भरी आंखों का भरम बात रहा हूं

पढती है सर-ए आलम-ए अस्रार कमंदें

लहराई हुई ज़ुल्फ़ के ख़म बांट रहा हूं

अफ़्कार मेरे चीर गए सीना-ए आफ़ाक़

अश’आर हैं या तेग़-ए दो-दम बांट रहा हूं

इस पर्दा-ए आवाज़ से पौ फूट रही है

फ़र्दा के जुलूसौं के अलम बांट रहा हूं

ये मेहर ओ वफ़ा के जो सुनाता हूं तराने

अए दोस्त तेरे लुत्फ़ ओ करम बांट रहा हूं

Was nominated to Indian Civil Service but chose to participate in the freedom movement. After independence he chose an academic career, teaching English at Allahabad University. O people looking for joy, I am giving away pain and sorrow. I am giving away that pain to which happiness pays tribute. It is implied that he is doing this through his verse.

I am the kind of immortal who has a secret agreement with death i.e., my words will live forever. I am giving away poison that will dazzle the nectar of immortality i.e., his words are painful, but they will live forever.

I have begun reading such a Ghazal that sends both worlds (this and the next) into a trance. Other than that, there is neither more nor less in what I am giving away.

jaadu bhari aaNkhoN ka bharam5 baaNT raha huN

Listening to my Ghazal every heart becomes the home of the musk deer. The musk deer is symbolic as a legend and is considered intoxicatingly fragrant. Thus that is the effect his Ghazal has on every heart. The eyes of the musk deer are supposed to large and magical. His Ghazal conveys the illusion of those eyes.

Unraveling the mysteries of mysticisms is one of the goals of shaa’eri. To throw a noose at something is to try capture it. Thus he is throwing nooses at the pinnacles of the world of mysticism. He is doing this with waves of curly hair. Writing about the beauty of the curls of the beloved’s hair with embedded mystical interpretations is a high art from of urdu poetics.

My thoughts tear through the bosom of the sky. These are not just my verses, they are double pointed swords that make deep and wide cuts. I am not sure what the tearing of the bosom of the sky signifies … maybe it is that the sky holds secrets and by tearing open its bosom he is revealing those secrets/mysteries.

His Ghazal are like sheets of music with words written on them. Th elight of knowledge emanates from them like dawn. They will be the banners unfurled in future processions of protest and resistance.
