اے بہ قد موجِ رواں برقِ تپاں سروِ سہی شاخِ گلِ تازہ و الہام خرامانِ بہار

پئے گل گشت ذرا اس قدِ بالائے فلک تاب و چمن ساز کو دے اذنِ خرام

کہ ترے ہجر میں بے کیف ہے بے روح ہے بے تاب ہے بے خواب ہے لیلائے خیابانِ بہار

بزم کی بزم ہے پژمردہ و افسردہ و دل بستہ و خاموش و ملول و غم ناک

کھول دے کاکل ژولیدہ و شب رنگ و جہاں صید و گہر بیز کہ ہے چشمۂ حیوانِ بہار

آ بھی جنبش میں کہ ہیں گوش بر آواز ادیبان و حریفان و گل و لالہ و سرو

اے لب لعل فسوں بار و دل آویز شکر ریز کہ ہے تجھ پہ فدا لرزشِ دامانِ بہار

بربط و عود و شراب و دف و افسانہ و افسون و شبِ ماہ و رباب و ساغر

آ کہ مشتاق ہیں اے جانِ چمن زہرہ جبیں ہوش ربا ماہ لقا شمع شبستانِ بہار

دہر ہے خفتہ و آشفتہ و آزردہ و غم دیدہ و ناشاد و زبوں حال و تباہ

ہاں اٹھا نرگس مخمور و گہر تاب و جنوں خیز کہ ہے محبسِ مے خانہ و زندانِ بہار

آج ہے حافظِ شیرازیؔ و خیامؔ و نظیریؔ و فغانیؔ و ظہوریؔ کا جواب

یہ ترا جوشؔ کہ ہے مست و خراباتی و سر حلقۂ رندانِ جہاں قبلۂ خاصانِ بہار

प’ए गुल-गश्त ज़रा उस क़द-ए बाला-ए फ़लक-ताब ओ चमन-साज़ को दे इज़्न-ए ख़िराम

के तेरे हिज्र में बे-कैफ़ है बे-रूह है बे-ताब है बे-ख़्वाब है लैला-ए ख़याबान-ए बहार

His nazm are fiery, passionate, and full of energy. His Ghazal and rubaaii are equally good. He was a secular humanist writing sharply and irreverently against colonialism, abuse of power, injustice and orthodoxy. The first misra speaks of the beloved’s beautiful face by comparing it to a page out of the folio of a blooming garden, to the lamp of the sanctuary where buds bloom, to a (verse in the qur’aan of spring) sign of raining rose petals. The second misra compares her stature to an undulating wave, a blinding light like a flash of lightning, a slender tall swaying cypress, a bough of fresh roses and the message of the graceful arrival of spring.

This damsel is depondent, joyless, dispirited, restless and sleepless because of separation from the poet/lover’s beloved. So he begs her (to give permission to her tall stature) to come out with the intent of a liesurely walk among the flowers, displaying her skylike brilliance and (garden creating) making flowers bloom.
