The sun surely does not need any bright ornaments. It is useless to throw perfume on flowers. If basic nature is superior there is no need to brag. Musk itself gives off fragrance, the perfumer does not have to say that it is musk. He who is evil, IS evil and he who is virtuous, IS virtuous. If incense has fragrance, it will not hide.

Native Beauty – Shakespeare

In King John, Act IV, Scene 2, King John has himself coronated a second time and his courtiers (tongue in cheek) admonish him.

To guard a title that was rich before,
To gild refined gold, to paint the lily,
To throw a perfume on the violet,
To smooth the ice, or add another hue
Unto the rainbow, or with taper-light
To seek the beauteous eye of heaven to garnish,
Is wasteful and ridiculous excess.
