ہوتی ہے خطا اور سے پاتا ہے سزا اور

اِس عالمِ تہذیب کے ہیں ارض و سما اور

اِس سمت جو پڑتی ہے بِنا رنگ محل کی

اُس سمت اُجڑتے ہیں دیارِ غربا اور

کوئی نہیں اِمکانِ ہم آہنگیِ عالم

مشرق کی صدا اور ہے مغرب کی صدا اور

ساقی تری محفل میں ابھی کیف نہیں ہے

درکار ہے رندوں کو مےِ روح فزا اور

بڑھ کر کوئی انساں سے نہیں ظالم و جاہل

اِنکارِ خطا کے لئے کرتا ہے خطا اور

۶

سمجھیں گے اُسے خُوگرِ ناقوس و اذاں کیا

ہوتی ہے شکستِ دلِ غمگیں کی صدا اور

پیمانۂ ہستی کہیں لبریز نہ ہو جائے

اے رِند رہِ شوق میں اک لغزشِ پا اور

۸

ڈوبے بھی کئی بار ہیں اُبھرے بھی کئی بار

ہم ہیں تو زمانے میں ہیں طوفانِ بلا اور

ریحانیؔ نظارہ بھی ہو گلزار بداماں

مل جائے بہاراں کو جو خونِ شہدا اور

उजढते हैं दयार-ए ग़ुरबा और – सय्यद शिफ़ा’अत हैन्सन रेहानी

होती है ख़ता और से पाता है सज़ा और

इस आलम-ए तहज़ीब के हैं अर्ज़ ओ समा और

इस सम्त जो पढती है बिना रंग महल की

उस सम्त उजढते हैं दयार-ए ग़ुरबा और

काई नहीं इम्कान-ए हम-आहंगी-ए आलम

मश्रिक़ कि सदा और है मग़्रिन कि सदा और

साक़ी तेरी महफ़िल में अभी कैफ़ नहीं है

दरकार है रिन्दौं को मय-ए रूह फ़ज़ा और

बढ कर कोई इन्सां से नहीं ज़ालिम ओ जाहिल

इन्कार-ए ख़ता के लिये करता है ख़ता और

समझेंगे उसे ख़ूगर-ए नाक़ूस ओ अज़’आं क्या

होती है शिकस्त-ए दिल-ए ग़मगीं कि सदा और

पैमाना-ए हस्ती कहीं लब्रेज़ न हो जाए

अए रिन्द, रह-ए शौक़ में एक लग़्ज़िश-ए पा और

डूबे भी कई बार हैं उभरे भी कई बार

हम हैं ज़माने में हैं तूफ़ान-ए बला और

रेहानी नज़ारा भी हो गुल्ज़ार ब-दामां

मिल जाए बहारां को जो ख़ून-ए शोहदा और

Educated in urdu and faarsi in raampur and later in punjab university. Started composing at an early age both in urdu and in faarsi with mirza jafar ali KhaaN asar lakhnavi (urdu) and farruKh shiiraazi (faarsi) as his mentors. He is a Christian urdu poet who has written conventional Ghazal as well as Christian devotional nazm. He has four collections to his credit and also compiled a booklet on devotional nazm for observing Good Friday and celebrating Easter. He served as pastor at the Methodist Church in hyderabad. This Ghazal is a poignant expression of inequities and injustices. This Ghazal has the same radeef as Ghalib’s ‘andaaz-e bayaaN aur’ but has a slightly different qaafiya but is still linked to ‘Ghalib naqsh-e qadam’.

Someone commits a transgression (injustice, oppression) and someone else is punished for it. The earth and sky of this civilized world are something else.

us samt1 ujaRte4 haiN dayaar5-e Ghurabaa6 aur

Here they lay foundations of colourful/beautiful palaces and over there more dwellings of the poor are destroyed.

mashriq4 ki sadaa5 aur hai maGhrib6 ki sadaa aur

There does not appear to be any possibility of harmony in the world. The East has a different sound than the West. Different tunes of the haves and have-nots of the world.

saaqi1 teri mahfil2 meN abhi kaif3 nahiN hai
darkaar4 hai rindoN5 ko mai6-e rooh-fazaa7 aur   
1.(wine) cup-bearer 2.gathering 3.pleasure, happiness, contentment 4.required 5.wine lovers, revelers 6.wine 7.spirit raising
O saaqi, there is not happiness/contentment in you gathering yet. A spirit-raising wine is required for the revelers to be happy. This could easily be about the conditions in the country with the ‘saaqi’ being political leadership and the spirit-raising wine, the wine of love.

baRh kar koii insaaN se nahiiN zaalim1 o jaahil2
inkaar3-e Khata4 ke liye karta hai Khata aur   
1.cruel 2.uncivilized 3.denial 4.transgression
There is no one more cruel and uncivilized than humans. In order to deny their culpability they commit even more transgressions.

hoti hai shikast4-e dil-e GhamgiiN5 ki sadaa6 aur

How can they understand it, who are used to the sound of the shankh or the az’aaN. The sound of the breaking of a sorrowful heart is very different i.e., conventional orthodoxy does not understand the pain/suffering of the sorrowful/poor.

paimaana1-e hasti2 kahiiN labrez3 na ho jaaye
aye rind4, rah5-e shauq6 meN ek laGhzish7-e paa8 aur

‘paimaana-e hasit labrez ho jaana’ is an expression that means ‘the measure of life is filled up’ i.e., life-span is all spent. The opportunity you had of living is gone. Thus, the poet encourages his listener … lest the opportunity to live be all used up, go ahead and take one more step along the pathway of love (rather than the path of conventional orthodoxy), even if you stumble.

hum haiN to zamaane4 meN haiN tuufaan5-e balaa6 aur

We have sunk many times, and have risen every time. As long as we live in the world there will be more calamitous storms to face.

The scene will be fragrant, the lap with piled with flowers O rehaani, if spring were to be cultivated a little more with the blood of martyrs i.e., if we remember that principles on which the martyrs of the independence movement gave their blood, then there would be peace and harmony.
