کوئی  مذہب  نہ  کوئی  قوم  نہ  فرقہ  اُردو

یہ  وہ  آئینہ  ہے  جس  میں  ہے  وطن  کا  منظر

پھوٹتی  ہے  اسی  دامن  سے  وفا  کی  خوشبو

اس  کی  انگڑائیاں  ہیں  گنگ  و  جمن  کا  منظر

ساقی  بزم  اگر  تو  نہ  سنے  کون  سنے

رِند  کے  درد  کی،  آلام  کی،  غم  کی،  باتیں

راستے  دو  ہی  سہی  ایک  ہے  منزل  پھر  بھی

سلسلہ  دیر  سے  رکھتی  ہیں  حرم  کی  باتیں

ہم  نے  قرآن  میں  ویدوں  کی  رچائیں  ڈھوڈیں

آبِ  زمزم  ہے  ہمیں  گنگ  و  جمن  کی  خوشبو

ذرّہ  ذرّہ  تری  دھرتی  کا  گلوں  سا  مہکے

سب  کو  راس  آئے  خدا  اپنے  وطن  کی  خوشبو

آپ  جذبات  کو  تقسیم  نہیں  کر  سکتے

کوئی  غم  ہو  کہ  خوشی  سب  کے  لیے  ہوتی  ہے

چاندنی  اوڑھ  کے  سوتے  ہوئے  نازک  غنچے

کیا  کسی  قوم  کا  احساسِ  جدا  ڈھونڈتے  ہیں

کیسے  ہندو  ہیں  یہاں  کس  کو  مسلماں  کہیے

کون  ہے  جس  سے  نہیں  ساتھ  رہا  اُردو  کا

فلسفہ  ہو  کہ  ہو  تاریخ  یا  رومانی  خیال

کون  سی  رگ  پہ  نہیں  ہاتھ  رہا  اُردو  کا

یہ  زبانوں  سے  نہ  ٹکرائی  نہ  ٹکرائے  گی

ایسا  بچ  بچ  کے  سرِ  راہ  سفر  اُردو  کا

ایسی  شیرینیِ  الفاظ  میسر  ہے  کہاں

کون  سا  دل  ہے  نہیں  جس  پہ  اثر  اُردو  کا

فرقہ  وارانہ  فسادات  تعصب  کا  دھواں

راس  آئے  نہ  کبھی  آئیں  گے  فنکاروں  کو

کوئی  سمجھے  تو  ذرا  اہل  قلم  کی  توفیق

اپنے  لفظوں  سے  بجھا  دیتے  ہیں  انگاروں  کو

ہم  سے  بڑھ  کر  ہے  یہاں  کون  وفادار  کہو

ہم  نے  اس  ملک  پہ  مٹنے  کی  قسم  کھائی  ہے

خادم  اُردو  کے  ہیں  اُردو  کی  بدولت  ہم  نے

ظلمتِ  شامِ  وطن  اشکوں  سے  چمکائی  ہے

ایسے  دیوانے  ہوئے  فصلِ  گلِ  ہند  تیرے

اپنے  دامن  بھی  گریباں  بھی  سبھی  چاک  کیے

برق  جب  صحنِ  گلستاں  پہ  شرر  بار  ہوئی

ہم  نے  پھولوں  کی  حفاظت  میں  بدن  خاک  کیے

ملکِ  بھارت  کے  ہر  ایک  گھر  میں  جلی  شمع  وفا

اہل  اُردو  نے  یہاں  ایسے  ترانے  چھیڑے

پریم  چند  اور  رتن  ناتھ  کو  پڑھ  کر  دیکھو

کتنی  گہرائی  سے  بھارت  کے  فسانے  چھیڑے

कोई मज़्हब न कोई क़ौम न फ़िर्क़ा उर्दू

ये वो आईना है जिसमें है वतन का मंज़र

फूटती है इसी दामन से वफ़ा की ख़ुशबू

इस की अंगढाइयां हैं गंग ओ जमन का मंज़र

साक़ी-ए बज़्म अगर तू न सुने कौन सुने

रिंद के दर्द की, आलाम की, ग़म की, बातें

रास्ते दो ही सही एक है मंज़िल फिर भी

सिलसिला दैर से रखती हैं हरम की बातें

हमने क़ुर’आन में वेदौं की रिचाएं ढूंढीं

आब-ए ज़मज़म है हमें गंग ओ जमन की ख़ुशबू

ज़र्रा ज़र्रा तेरी धरती का गुलों सा महके

सब को रास आये ख़ुदा, अपने वतन की ख़ुशबू

आप जज़्बात को तक़्सीम नहीं कर सकते

कोई ग़म हो के ख़ुशी सब के लिए होती है

चाँदनी ओढ़ के सोते हुए नाज़ुक ग़ुंचे

क्या किसी क़ौम का एहसास-ए जुदा ढूंढते हैं

कैसे हिंदू हैं यहां, किस को मुसलमान कहिए

कौन है जिससे नहीं साथ रहा उर्दू का

फ़लसफ़ा हो के हो तारिख़ या रूमानी ख़याल

कौन सी रग पे नहीं हाथ रहा उर्दू का

ये ज़बानों से न टक्राई न टक्राएगी

ऐसा बच-बच के सर-ए राह सफ़र उर्दू का

ऐसी शीरीनी-ए अल्फ़ाज़ मयस्सर है कहाँ

कौन सा दिल है नहीं जिस पे असर उर्दू का

फ़िर्क़ा-वाराना फ़सादात ता’अस्सुब का धुआँ

रास आए न कभी आएंगे फ़नकारों को

कोई समझे तो ज़रा अहल-ए क़लम की तौफ़ीक़

अपने लफ़्ज़ौं से बुझा देते हैं अंगारौं को

हम से बढ़ कर है यहाँ कौन वफ़ादार कहो

हमने इस मुल्क पे मिटने की क़सम खाई है

ख़ादेम उर्दू के हैं उर्दू की बदौलत हम ने

ज़ुल्मत-ए शाम-ए वतन अश्कों से चमकाई है

ऐसे दिवाने हुए फ़स्ल-ए गुल-ए हिंद तेरे

अपना दामन भी गरेबाँ भी सभी चाक किये

बर्क़ जब सहन-ए गुलिस्तां पे शरर-बार हुई

हम ने फूलों की हिफ़ाज़त में बदन ख़ाक किये

मुल्क-ए भारत के हर एक घर में जली शम’-ए वफ़ा

अहल-ए उर्दू ने यहां ऐसे तराने छेढे

प्रेम चंद और रतन नाथ को पढ़ कर देखो

कितनी गहराई से भारत के फ़साने चेहरे छेढे

He has several collections of nazm to his credit and collection of odes to islamic religious figures. This is a collection of qat’aat in praise of the urdu language.

Neither a religion, nor a community or group can claim urdu. This is a mirror that reflects the scene of the homeland. It is from the hem of the garment of urdu and the fragrance of faithfulness emanates. The twists and turns, stretching of urdu reflect the waves of gaNga and jamuna – the intermingling of hindu and muslim cultures.

rind2 ke dard ki, aalaam3 ki, Gham ki, baateN
raastay do hi sahi aik hai manzil4 phir bhi
silsila5 dair6 se rakhti haiN haram7 ki baateN

Here the reference to the ‘saaqi-e bazm’ could well be to the divine. O god, if you don’t hear, then who will hear the talk/story of pain and sorrow of the wine-drinker. The wine-drinker is symbolic of free thinking liberalism. He protests against the oppression of orthodoxy. There may be two paths but the destination is the same. The story of the mosque has a connection with the story of the temple.

We look for hindu prayer songs in the qur’aan. We can feel the fragrance of the water of zam-zam in the waters of the gaNga and jamuna. May every grain of sand of this land be fragrant like the rose. May the fragrance of our homeland be agreeable to everyone.

How can you divide emotions. Whether it be sorrow or happiness, it is the same for everyone. Sleeping, delicate flower buds draped in moonlight, do they search for separate feelings in each community. I suspect that the delicate buds draped in moonlight represent nature and nature does not differentiate between communities.

Who here is hindu or who can be called muslim – implying that they are all the same. Who is it with whom urdu has not been associated – implying that it is associated with all communities. Be it philosophy, history or romance writing, which vein has urdu not had its finger on.

It has no conflict with any other language. Such has been the unobtrusive journey of urdu along the its path. Where else can such sweetness of words be found. Which heart is it that has not been affected by urdu.

Communal conflict or even a hint/wisp of bigotry is not agreeable with poets. One should observe/understand the ability of writers/poets; with their words they can put out flames of conflict.

Khaadim4 urdu ke haiN urdu ki badaulat5 hum ne
zulmat6-e shaam-e vatan ashkoN7 se chamkaaii hai 
1.faithful, loyal 2.sacrificed 3.promise, resolve 4.servant 5.because of 6.darkness 7.tears
Who, in this land, is more loyal than ‘us’. Here, ‘us’ probably refers to urdu poets or urdu lovers. We have resolved to sacrifice ourself for the homeland. We are servants/lovers of urdu and by means of urdu we light up the dark nights of the homeland.

To tear or rip the shirt collar down to the hem of the garment is to show extreme passion. The season of blooming of flowers of hindustaan is probably the coming of independence, or of social justice. Thus, we (poets) were so madly in love with your spring that we ripped our collars down to the hem of the garment. Whenever lightning struck and rained sparks on the garden, we offered our bodies to be burnt to ashes in order to protect the flowers.
