ये रात आज जो यूं पेश-ए यार गुज़्री है

मेरी हयात में क्या यादगार गुज़्री है

वो गुल्सितां में यक़ीनन यहीं कहीं होंगे

बढे अदब से नसीम-ए बहार गुज़्री है

क़दम जमे न किसी के भी सहन-ए गुल्शन में

कभी ख़िज़ां कभी फ़स्ल-ए बहार गुज़्री है

वो हर घढी है मेरी ज़िंदगी का हासिल जो

ब-ज़ेर-ए साया-ए गेसू-ए यार गुज़्री है

किसे ख़बर के हमारी हयात-ए ग़म-आलूद

ब-याद-ए यार ओ दिल-ए सोगवार गुज़्री है

चमन चमन में परेशां है बू-ए ज़ुल्फ़ उस की

रविश रविश से सबा मुश्क-बार गुज़्री है

न रास आई तुझे तो क्या हुआ मग़्मूम

हवा-ए दहर किसे साज़्गार गुज़्री है

His father was a scholar of urdu and faarsi and grandfather (tulsidas) was also an urdu shaa’er. Ill-treatment by his step-mother drove him to seclusion and reading. All the books at home including religious texts were in urdu. He read up all of them and learnt to write too. Interest in shaa’eri started from childhood. In college he was class fellow of jagan nath azad and through him became a disciple of tilok chand mahroom. Continued education incluing Public Service Commission exam. Worked for the government of panjab and later haryana, retiring in 1974. At least 10 collections of his shaa’eri including Ghazal, rubaaii and nazm. This is one of a collection under the same radeef ‘guzri hai’.

Here ‘sahn-e chaman’ is the earth/world. None could gain a foot-hold in this world. Everything is transient, passing through like the seasons.

Every moment that I have spent under the shadow of the beloved’s hair has been the essence of my life.

The poet/lover has spent all his life pining away and remembering the beloved. But because of the conventions of love, he hides his pain so as not to malign the beloved’s reputation. So, nobody is aware that his life has been spent drowned in sorrow.
