ہم سے پوچھئے ۔ خمار بارہ بنکوی
اِک پل میں اِک صدی کا مزا ہم سے پوچھئے
دو دن کی زندگی کا مزا ہم سے پوچھئے
بھولے ہیں رفتہ رفتہ اُنہیں مدتّوں میں ہم
قِسطوں میں خودکُشی کا مزا ہم سے پوچھئے
آغازِ عاشقی کا مزا آپ جانئے
انجامِ عاشقی کا مزا ہم سے پوچھئے
جلتے دیوں میں جلتے گھروں جیسی ضو کہاں
سرکار روشنی کا مزا ہم سے پوچھئے
وہ جان ہی گئے کہ ہمیں اُن سے پیار ہے
آنکھوں کی مُخبری کا مزا ہم سے پوچھئے
ہنسنے کا شوق ہم کو بھی تھا آپ کی طرح
ہنسئے مگر ہنسی کا مزا ہم سے پوچھئے
ہم توبہ کر کے مر گئے قبلِ اجل خمارؔ
توہینِ مے کشی کا مزا ہم سے پوچھئ
हम से पूछिए – ख़ुमार बाराबंकवी
एक पल में एक सदी का मज़ा हम से पूछिए
दो दिन की ज़िंदगी का मज़ा हम से पूछिए
भूले हैं रफ़्ता रफ़्ता उन्हें मुद्दतों में हम
क़िस्तों में ख़ुद-कुशी का मज़ा हम से पूछिए
आग़ाज़-ए-आशिक़ी का मज़ा आप जानिए
अंजाम-ए-आशिक़ी का मज़ा हम से पूछिए
जलते दियों में जलते घरों जैसी ज़ौ कहाँ
सरकार रौशनी का मज़ा हम से पूछिए
वो जान ही गए के हमें उन से प्यार है
आँखों की मुख़बिरी का मज़ा हम से पूछिए
हँसने का शौक़ हम को भी था आप की तरह
हँसिए मगर हँसी का मज़ा हम से पूछिए
हम तौबा कर के मर गए क़ब्ल-ए अजल ख़ुमार
तौहीन-ए-मय-कशी का मज़ा हम से पूछिए

ek pal1 meN ek sadi2 ka maza hum se poocchiye
do din ki zindagi ka maza hum se poocchiye1.moment 2.century
The poet/lover is separated from the beloved. Each moment spent thus is such an agony that it feels like a 100 years. ‘maza hum se poochhiye’ is a tongue in cheek/sarcastic expression meaning ‘ask us who have undergone this toruture, what it feels like’. His life span is short ‘only two days’ and even that is spent in agony.

Forgetting the beloved is like committing suicide. The poet/lover has been forced into this situation step by step over a long period of time. It is like committing suicide in installments.

The poet/lover is being sarcastic. The beloved’s mischief/playfulness started the process of romance. In the end she either dumped him or continues to play with him from a distance.

‘Burning down your own house’ is a idiomatic expression to mean bring a lot of harm upon yourselves and your household. This might be due to extreme distress/passion or madness. In this case it is due to the poet/lover’s distress. Here the poet uses this as a play on words in the literal sense. How can lit lamps have the same brilliance as a burning house. Ask us (who have burnt our house down) about the pleasure of bright light.

The poet/lover tried hard to hide it, but she found out that he was in love with her. His eyes gave him away. Thus eyes engaged in spying, sly reporting.
haNsne ka shauq1 hum ko bhi tha aap ki tarah
haNsiye magar haNsi ka maza hum se poocchiye1.desire, habit
The poet/lover laughs/smiles to hide his pain. He understands the ‘pleasure’ of such laughter. I too had a habit of smiling just like you (in the early stages of romance when the poet/lover was happy). Keep smiling, (my beloved) but ask me about the real ‘pleasure’ of smiling (to hide pain).
