aaNkh bhar aana is eyes welling up with tears. And in the ‘lake’ thus formed, lotuses bloom/eyes shine. This happens whenever anyone mentions her (bhagmati) name and the story of her love.

‘yahiN’ here means bhagmati’s vafa/faith/love and ‘inqilabaat’ is the revolutionary idea that a commoner/dancer marries a king. Thus, celebration and merriment, showers of music and colour, revolutionary change in cultural practice all started from here … from her love for quli qutub shah.

In the days of quli qutub shah there used to be a lot of wealth. Now all that blessed rain of wealth, the cloud of gold is gone. Streets are no longer paved with gold and palaces are not made of diamonds. But still bodies are piled in the bazaar and the powerful of the city are among the buyers of Beauty – here maKhdoom strikes a different mood.

Golden streets and diamond palaces may be gone, but friendship and love remains. At the top of the list is your name. You may be gone, but your watchful eye (to keep us on the harmonious path) is still upon us.
