Click here for background and on any passage for word meanings and explanatory discussion. ali sikandar jigar muradabadi (1890-1961) a poet of romance and sufiyaana thought often allegorically mixing the two. His compositions are very musical and and are sung often at Ghazal singing performances. This is a very powerful Ghazal with sufiyaana undertones. It is about the essence of humanity, universal love and making heaven on earth, rather than live in an imaginary world of superstition. I think the word “yaqiN” is used in the sense of self-confidence/courage.

Set fire to the garbage of superstition. Build a great fire/enthusiasm of courage/confidence (so you can develop reason as opposed to superstition).

If you have love (in your heart) make it universal love (rather than love of self). Your heart is virtuous, then make your love also pure.

How long will you be focused on thoughts of heaven. Make the earth beautiful so that it can put heaven to shame.

batn⁴-e har-zarra⁵ se ek mahr⁶-e mubiN⁷ paida kar 1.drop 2.storm 3.enlightenment, brilliance 4.womb 5.every particle (of dust) 6.sun 7.clear, bright
Create a storm of enlightenment in every drop (of blood) in your heart. Make a bright sun emerge from the womb of every particle of dust.

bandagi¹ yuN to hai insaan ki fitrat² laikin
naaz³ jis pe kareN sajde⁴ vo jabiN⁵ paida kar 1.servitude, obeisance 2.nature 3.pride 4.prostrations, bowing down 5.forehead
Normally humans bow down, put their forehead to earth (sajda) in obeisance to god. It may be human nature to offer such homage (to god). Develop such a brow (confidence, dignity, virtue) that obeisance itself be proud of it.

pasti¹-e Khaak² pe kab tak teri be-baal-o-pari³
phir maqaam⁴ apna sar⁵-e arsh-e-bariN⁶ paida kar 1.low status 2.dust, clay, earth 3.without wings or feathers 4.place 5.at the head of 6.high heaven
How long will you stay on this low earth without wings. Fly and make yourself a place at the head of high heaven.

ishq hi zinda o paa’inda¹ haqiqat² hai jigar
ishq ko ’aam³ bana zauq⁴-e yaqiN⁵ paida kar 1.well founded, permanent 2.truth, reality 3.common, general, widespread 4.liking, taste 5.courage
(Universal) love alone is real (not an illusion) and permanent, O jigar. Be not afraid and spread love wide.
