میں نہ کھاؤں گا کبھی حُسنِ تغافل کے فریب
میری جانب تیرے درپردہ نظر ہے کہ نہیں

اب یہ عالم ہے کہ جو ہجر کی شب آتی ہے
میں یہ کہتا ہوں کہ اِس شب کی سحر ہے کہ نہیں

پوچھ مجھ سے نہ میرے زخمِ جگر کی حالت
میرے دامن میں ہر آنسو گُلِ تر ہے کہ نہیں

मैं न खाऊंगा कभी हुस्न-ए तग़ाफ़ुल के फ़रेब

I do not know if there is any effect of my love or not. Is she going through the same (restlessness) that I am or not.

maiN ye kahta huN ke is shab ki sahar4 hai ke nahiN 1.condition, position 2.separation 3.night 4.dawn
The condition of the poet/lover is so distraught that every night of separation (from the beloved) he wonders if he will live through this night to see the dawn.

mere daaman4 meN har aaNsu gul-e tar5 hai ke nahiN 1.wound 2.liver/heart 3.condition 4.lap, hem of the robe 5.moist, fresh
In urdu verse ‘jigar/liver’ is the seat of fortitude/courage while ‘dil/heart’ is the seat of emotions/love. But often, they are used interchangeably. Do not even ask me about the condition of my wounded heart. The tears collected in my lap are like fresh roses, are they not.

abhi is Khaak3 meN toofaan-e sharar4 hai ke nahiN 1.glance 2.erase, forget, ignore 3.ashes 4.sparks, fire (of love)
The beloved is totally erasing/removing from consideration any and all advances by the poet/lover. At least take a glance at these burnt ashes, they still have the fire of love burning, do they not!

True love cannot but get absorbed/become one with the beloved. The second misra then is a question, may be a challenge, to the beloved. Do you too have the same glory/level as jigar/poet/lover.

phir na kahna mera diivaana jigar hai ke nahiN 1.dust off 2.hem of the robe
Conventionally people gather their things (even sentiments and feelings) in their apron/skirt/robe. To get up, dusting off the hem of the robe means giving up all possessions, giving up hope and walking away. The poet/lover is so disappointed that he is dusting off his robe and leaving. He cautions the beloved, don’t ask later “is my mad lover jigar around or not”.

varna3 ek silsila4-e shaam o sahar5 hai ke nahiN

Normally, there is a continuity/routine repetition of day and night. But that which is called “union” – promised day of union, don’t we know the reality behind that! The implication is that this is a false promise, that day or night will never come. Otherwise days and night routinely follow each other.
