اب  ان  سے  تقاضا  کون  کرے  ۔  پریم  لال  شفاؔ  دہلوی

دانسہ  تغافل  کرتے  ہیں  اب  ان  پہ  بھروسہ  کون  کرے

جب  تک  نہ  اِشارہ  ہو  اُن  کا  اظہارِ  تمنّا  کون  کرے

ہم  اپنا  شکستہ  دل  لے  کر  بازارِ  خرد  میں  پھرتے  ہیں

دیوانہ  کوئی  جب  تک  نہ  ملے  اِس  دل  کا  سودا  کون  کرے

ہم  ضبط  کا  دامن  کیوں  چھوڑیں  جب  تک  ہے  وجودِ  دل  باقی

ہوگا  تو  کرم  ہو  جائے  گا  اب  ان  سے  تقاضا  کون  کرے

ایک  ان  کے  کرم  سے  دنیا  کے  ہر  غم  کا  مداوا  ممکن  ہے

جس  غم  کا  تعلق  ان  سے  ہو  اس  غم  کا  مداوا  کون  کرے

ہم  اپنی  مصیبت  کو  اپنے  اعمال  کا  حاصل  کہتے  ہیں

توہینِ  محبت  کون  کرے  محبوب  کو  رسوا  کون  کرے

ہر  بات  تصنّع  سے  پُر  ہے  یہ  دور  ہے  ظاہر  داری  کا

وعدے  تو  سب  ہی  کر  لیتے  ہیں  وعدوں  کو  ایفا  کون  کرے

ہر  دم  ہو  جزا  کا  اندیشہ  تو  سعیِ  عمل  ناممکن  ہے

ہم  حسنِ  عمل  کے  قائل  ہیں  اندیشۂ  فردہ  کون  کرے

ساقی  نے  نگاہیں  جب  پھیری  منہ  موڑ  لیا  میخانے  سے

ہم  رِند  ہیں  لیکن  الفت  کی  تذلیل  گوارا  کون  کرے

آداب  جدا  ہیں  الفت  کے  ہے  راہ  الگ  دیوانوں  کی

دنیا  سے  شفاؔ  ہم  کیا  لیں  گے  پابندیِ  دنیا  کون  کرے

अब उन से तक़ाज़ा कौन करे – प्रेम लाल शिफ़ा देहलवी

दानिस्ता तग़ाफ़ुल करते हैं अब उन पे भरोसा कौन करे

जब तक न इशारा हो उनका इज़्हार-ए तमन्ना कौन करे

हम अपना शिकस्ता दिल लेकर बाज़ार-ए ख़िरद में फिरते हैं

दीवाना कोई जब तक न मिले इस दिल का सौदा कौन करे

ज़ब्त का दामन क्यूं छोढें जब तक है वुजूद-ए दिल बाक़ी

होगा तो करम हो जाएगा अब उनसे तक़ाज़ा कौन करे

एक उनके करम से दुनिया के हर ग़म का मुदावा मुमकिन है

जिस ग़म का ता’अल्लुक़ है उनसे उस ग़म का मुदावा कौन करे

हम अपनी मुसीबत को अपने आमाल का हासिल कहते हैं

तौहीन-ए मोहब्बत कौन करे महबूब को रुस्वा कौन करे

हर बात तसन्नो से पुर है ये दौर है ज़ाहेर-दारी का

वादे तो सभी कर लेते हैं वादौं को ईफ़ा कौन करे

हर दम हो जज़ा का अंदेशा तो स’ई-ए अमल नामुमकिन है

हम हुस्न-ए अमल के क़ा’एल हैं अंदेशा-ए फ़र्दा कौन करे

साक़ी ने निगाहें जब फेरीं, मुंह मोढ लिया मय-ख़ाने से

हम रिंद हैं लैकिन उल्फ़त की तज़्लील गवारा कौन करे

आदाब जुदा हैं उल्फ़त के, है राह अलग दीवानौं की

दुनिया से शिफ़ा हम क्या लेंगे पाबंदी-ए दुनिया कौन करे

Completed his medical degree 1934 and started practice. Learnt Russian and French taking degrees in 1954. Seven languages urdu, hindi, sanskrit, English, Russian, French and some German. He did urdu translations of classical Russian poems. Interested in urdu shaa’eri from childhood, memorizing ash’aar of many masters. Started composing and became shaagird of fazl-e ilaahi maKhmoor dehlavi. First publication was translation of Russian poems. His own collection of urdu was published in 1959. daanista1 taGhaaful2 kartay haiN, ab un pe bharosa3 kaun karay
jab tak na ishaara4 ho un ka, izhaar5-e tamanna6 kaun karay

The poet/lover wants to express his desire to the beloved but is hesitant. He wants to receive some indication from her that she is willing to listen. He wants to wait because so far, she has been intentionally ignoring him. How can I trust her, he says.

ham apna shikasta1 dil le kar baazaar-e Khirad2 meN phirtay haiN
diivaana koi jab tak na milay, is dil ka sauda3 kaun karay

The heart is the seat of emotions/love/passion which is very different from knowledge/reason. His heart is broken because the beloved has not reciprocated his love. He is trying to offer his broken heart for sale in the market of reason. Unless someone insane comes to the bazaar, how can he hope for any trade.

hoga to karam5 ho jaa’ega, ab un say taqaaza6 kaun karay

Letting go of the hem of the garment of self-control is poetic expression meaning losing self-control. As long as I have my heart, why should I lose my stoic forbearance. If the beloved is going to show favours, she will. Why should I demand/beg for favours. Thus, he is using ‘self-control’ more in the sense of ‘self-respect’.

jis Gham ka ta’alluq4 hai un say, us Gham ka mudaava2 kaun karay

With one favour from her it is possible to cure every sorrow of the world. But the sorrow which is related to her (which is caused by her) who can cure that sorrow.

tauhiin4-e mohabbat kaun karay, mahboob5 ko rusva6 kaun karay

The ‘code of love’ requires that the lover never blame the beloved. Here the implication is that the beloved is responsible for his problems, but he declares that his difficulties are a result of his own actions. Who would insult love (violate the code) and embarrass the beloved.

vaa’de5 to sabhi kar letay haiN, vaa’doN ko eefa6 kaun karay

Every word is full of insincerity/deception. These are the times of exhibitionism. Everyone makes promises, but who will fulfill their commitment. This appears to be more general … not specific to the beloved.

ham husn7-e amal5 kay qaa’el8 haiN, andesha3-e farda9 kaun karay

It is not possible to make a sustained effort if you expect a reward every moment. The poet declares himself to be a believer in refined action/effort regardless of the expectation of rewards.
