لا پھر اِک بار وہی بادہ و جام اے ساقی

ہاتھ آ جائے مجھے میرا مقام اے ساقی

تین سو سال سے ہیں ہند کے میخانے بند

اب مناسب ہے تیرا فیض ہو عام اے ساقی

میری مینائے غزل میں تھی ذرا سی باقی

شیخ کہتا ہے کہ ہے یہ بھی حرام اے ساقی

شیر مردوں سے ہوا بیشۂ تحقیق تہی

رہ گئے صوفی و مُلّا کے غلام اے ساقی

عشق کی تیغِ جگردار اُڑا لی کس نے

علم کے ہاتھ میں خالی ہے نیام اے ساقی

سینہ روشن ہو تو ہے سوزِ سخن عینِ حیات

ہو نہ روشن تو سخن مرگِ دوام اے ساقی

تو مری رات کو مہتاب سے محروم نہ رکھ

ترے پیمانے میں ہے ماہِ تمام اے ساقی

हाथ आ जाए मुझे मेरा मक़ाम अए साक़ी

तीन सौ साल से हैं हिंद के मैख़ाने बंद

अब मुनासिब है तेरा फ़ैज़ हो आम आए साक़ी

मेरी मीना-ए ग़ज़ल में थी ज़रा सी बाक़ी

शैक़ कहता है के है ये भी हराम अए साक़ी

शेर मर्दों से हुअ बेशा-ए-तहक़ीक़ तेही

रह गए सूफ़ी-ओ-मुल्ला के ग़ुलाम अए साक़ी

इश्क़ की तेग़-ए-जिगरदार उड़ा ली किस ने

इल्म के हाथ में ख़ाली है नियाम अए साक़ी

सीना रौशन हो तो है सोज़-ए-सुख़न ऐन-ए-हयात

हो ना रौशन, तो सुख़न मर्ग-ए-दवाँ अए साक़ी

तू मेरी रात को महताब से महरूम ना रख

तेरे पैमाने में है माह-ए-तमाम अए साक़ी !

shaiKh kahta hai ke hai ye bhi haraam aye saaqi

There was a little bit left in the flask of my verse (no one else was writing about it). And now the shaiKh has declared even this as ‘not allowed’. iqbal is protesting against ritualistic orthodoxy which forbids inquiry and questioning. Yet, in other phases of his life, he himself turns orthodox.

rah gaye sufi-o-mullah ke Ghulam aye saaqi
.brave souls 2.jungle 3.inquiry, learning 4.devoid of
The forest of Truth/Learning/Inquiry is devoid of brave souls. Only slaves and blind followers of the orthodox remain.

ishq1 ki teGh2-e jigardar3 uRa li kis ne
ilm ke haath meN Khaali hai niyaam4 aye saaqi
.(universal) love 2.sword 3.brave, daring 4.scabbard
Who has made off with Love’s ready sword? Only a scabbard is left in the hands of Knowledge, O, saaqi.

seena raushan ho to hai soz1-e suKhan2 ayn3-e hayaat
ho na raushan, to suKhan marg4-e davaam5 aye saaqi
.fire, passion 2.verse 3.essence 4.death 5.eternal
When there is light (open to new ideas) in the bosom, then verse speaks the essence of life. But if there is darkness in the heart, then verse that comes out is bland like eternal death.
