جوابِ چشمِ جاناں کیوں نہ ہو تیری زباں عثماں

اُدھر جادو نگاہی ہے اِدھر جادو  بیانی ہے

अजब ख़ुश-रंग अए साक़ी शराब-ए अर्ग़वानी है

तवाज़’ओ के लिए ख़ून-ए जिगर काफ़ी नहीं होता

मेरे दिल में हुजूम-ए यास कि जो मेहमानी है

मेरे दिल को न क्यूंकर उन्स हो दाग़-ए मोहब्बत से

मोहब्बत का ये तोहफ़ा है ये उल्फ़त कि निशानी है

निगाहें क़हर ढाती हैं, अदाएं दिल लुभाती हैं

क़यामत जिस को कहते हैं तेरी उठती जवानी है

जवाब-ए चश्म-ए जानन क्यूं न हो तेरी ज़बां उस्मां

उधर जादू-निगाही है, इधर जादू-बयानी है

It can also be interpreted with sufiyaana thoughts if ‘wine’ is thought of as ‘love of the divine’ and ‘beloved’ as ‘the divine’. In the maqta, osman ali KhaaN praises his own poetic ability in a rather delicate, yet defiant way.

Deep red wine (of love of the divine) is very enchanting, O, saaqi. It increases happiness in the heart and brings spring-like joy to life.

In the poet’s heart there is a fullness/crowd of sentiments of longing for the beloved/god. He considers this longing to be his guest and wants to offer warm hospitality. The blood of his heart is not good enough … he needs to serve something else in additions to it … but the poet does not tell us what that something else is. We are left to our own imagination.

The eyes of the beloved are considered unequaled in beauty, but the poet/lover offers his own verse as so beautiful that it would stand up to the beauty of the beloved’s eyes.
