laKht-e jigar-maKhdoom

laKht-e jigar – maKhdoom mohiuddin

Click here for overall comments and on any passage for word meanings and discussion.  maKhdoom’s father died when he was still an infant. His mother married again but gave up her child (don’t know the reason, could be due to the insistence of the new husband). maKhdoom was brought up by his paternal uncle, not even aware that he had a mother living somewhere. He became aware of this much later in life. This composition (I think) reflects that new found knowledge.

muhabbat ko tum laakh phaiNk aao gahre kueN meN
magar ek aavaz peechha karegi
kabhi chaandni raat ka geet ban kar
kabhi ghup andhere ki paglee haNsi ban ke
peechha karegi
magar ek aavaaz peechha karegi
Love cannot be abandoned. It comes back, chases you, doesn’t give up and tickles memories on moonlit nights or even on dark nights like a wild scream and speaks to you.
