پاؤں جب ٹوٹتی شاخوں سے اتارے ہم نے

ان مکانوں کو خبر ہے نہ مکینوں کو خبر

ان دنوں کی جو گپھاؤں میں گزارے ہم نے

ہاتھ ڈھلتے گئے سانچے میں تو تھکتے کیسے

نقش کے بعد نئے نقش نکھارے ہم نے

بام و در اور، ذرا اور سنوارے ہم نے

آندھیاں توڑ لیا کرتی تھیں شمعوں کی لویں

جڑ دیئے اس لیے بجلی کے ستارے ہم نے

بن گیا قصر تو پہرے پہ کوئی بیٹھ گیا

بند آنکھوں میں اسی قصر کی تصویر لیے

دن پگھلتا ہے اسی طرح سروں پر اب تک

رات آنکھوں میں کھٹکتی ہے سیہ تیر لیے

कोई खिड़की इसी दीवार में खुल जाएगी

ये ज़मीं तब भी निगल लेने पे आमादा थी

पाँव जब टूटती शाख़ों से उतारे हम ने

उन मकानों को ख़बर है न मकीनों को ख़बर

उन दिनों की जो गुफाओं में गुज़ारे हम ने

हाथ ढलते गए साँचे में तो थकते कैसे

नक़्श के बाद नए नक़्श निखारे हम ने

की ये दीवार बुलंद, और बुलंद, और बुलंद

बाम ओ दर और, ज़रा और सँवारे हम ने

आँधियाँ तोड़ लिया करती थीं शम’औं की लवें

जड़ दिए इस लिए बिजली के सितारे हम ने

बन गया क़स्र तो पहरे पे कोई बैठ गया

सो रहे ख़ाक पे हम शोरिश-ए तामीर लिए

अपनी नस नस में लिए मेहनत-ए पैहम की थकन

बंद आँखों में उसी क़स्र की तस्वीर लिए

दिन पिघलता है उसी तरह सरों पर अब तक

रात आँखों में खटकती है सियह तीर लिए

आज की रात बहुत गर्म हवा चलती है

Workers have spent all day building mansions for the rich and powerful. At the end of the day, they have to content themselves with sleeping on the sidewalk. But the wind is burning hot and it is not possible to sleep. He calls upon comrades to rise, everyone of them. Perhaps a window, an opportunity for liberation will open up in the very wall that obstructs progress.

This earth was ready to swallow us even when we first stepped down from the trees to the earth i.e. in the early days, before we were civilized it was ‘survival of the fittest’, ‘dog eat dog’, fighting for scarce resources. Neither these mansions nor the residents of the mansions seem to have any awareness of the days that we/humans spent in caves. We are out of the caves and supposed to be civilized now.

Our hands got cast in new moulds, we acquired new strength and new skills. How could these hands get tired. How could they rest. We refined plan after plan, making sheltering walls stronger and stronger, embellishing mansion after mansion.

Winds, forces of nature could out the flames of candles that we had lit, leaving us vulnerable. So we embedded electric stars to light the mansion i.e. we invented and made all the conveniences of life. But when the mansion was complete, someone usurped it and set a guard at the door leaving us in the dust, agitating for progress.

Every fibre of the body tired with constant struggle, we still imagined in our dreams pictures of that mansion that we had built. The days melted/passed over our heads the same as before. Nights pricked our eyes like dark arrows.
