yaar hamaara guzre tha-faiz

Tina sani singing

ek dakkani Ghazal – faiz ahmed faiz

Click here for overall comments and on any she’r for word meanings and discussion.  This Ghazal appears in “mere dil mere musafir” right alongside a title “do GhazleN – maKhdoom ki yaad meN”, dated Moscow, Oct 1978. This Ghazal is also dated Oct 1978. The title, “dakkani” (maKhdoom being from the Deccan) Ghazal and its content impel me to believe that this is also in memory of maKhdoom. The language is somewhat like that spoken in the Deccan, at least faiz seems to have meant it to sound like that.

kuchh pahle in aaNkhoN aage kya kya na nazaara guzre tha
kya raushan ho jaati thi gali, jab yaar hamara guzre tha
Oh for the days when these eyes saw such wondrous scenes, the lane, resplendent, whenever my friend passed through.

the kitne achche log ke jinko apne Gham se fursat1 thi
sob poochhe thiiN ahvaal2 jo koi, dard ka maara guzre tha
1.forgetting one’s own sorrow 2.welfare
How many people then, took time away from their own care, to ask the passerby his woes, inquire after his welfare.

abke to KhizaaN3 aisi Thahri4 vo saare zamaane bhool gaye
jab mosam-e gul5 har phere meN aa aa ke dubara guzre tha
3.dry barren season, fall 4.tarried, stayed around 5.spring
Seasons barren now, linger for so long that we have forgotten those days when spring would turn up twice a year.

thi yaaroN ki bohtaat6 to hum, aGhyaar7 se bhi bezaar8 na the
jab mil baiThe to dushman ka bhi saath gavaara9 guzre tha
6.excess, may 7.strangers 8.tired of 9.acceptable
With friends so many, we didn’t mind even strangers. Even the company of the rival did not pall.

ab to haath sujhaai na deve10, laikin ab se pahle to
aaNkh uThte hi ek nazar meN, aalam saara guzre tha
10.cannot even see my hand
It is so dark that I can barely see my own two hands, but there was a time when, I just had to lift my eyes, to see the whole world before me.
